    By Popular Demand,

    NOTIS returns to the Ballet!

Date & Time: Friday, November 14, 2025, at 7:30 PM

Location: McCaw Hall, Pacific Northwest Ballet

Address:  321 Mercer St, Seattle, WA

If you missed our event in June or would like to see more of Twyla Tharp: please join us at another pay-what-you-want performance of the Pacific Northwest Ballet. It will be the last theatre outing for NOTIS in 2025!

“Pay What You Want” night means that you can get in for as little as $5! (By all means, please feel free to be generous to support the PNB,  one of the top five ballet companies in the US.)

We will need to buy our own tickets, and we will have to wait in line to get them. The box office opens at 6 pm, and the line forms even earlier.

Alternatively, you can buy tickets to this show in advance for $39 by signing up for the "Beer and Ballet" program on the PNB website and getting a discount code.

    About the Program

Dive into greatness with Twyla Tharp’s iconically athletic In The Upper Room, Dani Rowe’s heartbreaking The Window, and a world premiere from PNB Company dancers Christopher D’Ariano and Amanda Morgan. A whirl of music, dance, and fog, this collection features custom scores by Philip Glass and Shannon Rugani and will leave you marveling at the skill of PNB Company dancers.

    https://www.pnb.org/season/in-the-upper-room/

    Meet-and-Greet before the Show

After buying tickets, we’ll gather for refreshments in the area to the right of the box office, near the entrance to the restaurant, starting at 6:30 pm. Please look for the table with a NOTIS sign on it. Beverage options are excellent but you may want to have dinner in advance or smuggle in a sandwich. There are no posted signs forbidding bringing your own food.

    Parking

Please note there is a concert scheduled at the Climate Pledge Arena, so parking in the area might be somewhat scarce and expensive. You can prepay parking at the garage across the street from the theatre on the PNB website: https://order.pnb.org/events?k=parking

To RSVP, click the Register button. Hope to see you there!

NOTIS’s Community Interpreters Division (CID) presents:

    Stress and Interpreting
    Presented by Eliana Lobo

    What is this training about?

Attendees will learn how stress negatively impacts performance, and what they can do about it. This training explains how the physiological effects of stress impact and impede language production and conversion, while providing tools and techniques to help manage stress and improve performance.

Training strategies, techniques for self-calming and study plans for interpreters will be shared with the goal of better preparing working interpreters to be better at handling stress in the moment of interpreting.

    Content includes
techniques to improve and manage memory, breathing exercises to reduce stress and improve message delivery. Methods for establishing baseline metrics (how fast is too fast, how long is too long) will be shared; and exercises for measuring one’s progress, as well as establishing stretch goals for memory and speed will be demonstrated and shared.

Sample scripts for managing flow before the discussion or conversation goes off track will be given. Participants will be encouraged to personalize scripted templates for us in the pre-session and when asking for a repetition or clarification. Skill drills that simulate added stress will be shared. These simulations help prepare interpreters to work while experiencing stress, in that they can learn to develop the additional mechanical skills together with the ability to work through their stress, and ultimately do a better job, while on the job.

    Ethics Jeopardy! 2.0
    Presented by Cindy Roat

    What’s it about?
Ethics has never been so much fun! This two-hour class uses the format of the game show “Jeopardy!” to meet your one-credit ethics requirement for DSHS as well as to get you thinking about how the DSHS Code of Conduct applies to real-life situations. Join veteran interpreter trainer Cindy Roat for a fun and ethical workshop!

    Learning objectives:

At the conclusion of this class, participants will be able to:

    • Name the 12 canons of the DSHS Code of Conduct
    • Identify which canon applies to a given circumstance in healthcare or social service interpreting.

    • Use the principles of the canons to the given circumstances to describe an appropriate response in the given circumstances.

    Handout12-WAC 388-03-050 DSHS Code of Conduct 2021.pdf

This class is a redesign of the very popular Ethics Jeopardy! class approved by LTC in 2023. As so many interpreters have asked to retake the class for their annual ethics credit, the class has been redesigned, using the same Jeopardy template but changing the questions and answers.

This short class will still begin with a quick review of the canons of the DSHS Code of Conduct. Then, as in the previous version, the participants will be split into two teams to play a game using the Jeopardy format to challenge their memory of the canons and their ability to apply the canons to specific interpreting challenges. The questions, however, will be different, as will the specific interpreting challenges presented.

This workshop will not be recorded.
To earn credit, live attendance is required.

NOTIS’s Community Interpreters Division (CID) presents:

Understanding Basic Medical Terminology for Interpreters and Translators

    Presented by Joe Tein, M.A.

    What is it about?

Understanding Medical Terminology for Interpreters and Translators is designed to make the fascinating and often complex “foreign” language of medicine more accessible. Participants will learn widely used basic medical terms, and principles for deciphering new, unfamiliar terms based on an understanding of the building blocks of medical terminology. We will then review specialized terms used in different specialty fields of medicine. This webshop is appropriate for medical interpreters and translators who wish to strengthen their understanding of the language of medicine, and an excellent foundation for court interpreters who encounter medical terms in their work. Because the focus is on learning basic terms and understanding how medical terms are constructed – rather than on interpreting practice –  this webshop is relevant for professionals working in any language pair.

    When?  Saturday, February 7th, 2026, 9:00 a.m. - 2 p.m. PST. This is a 5 hour workshop. Check-in at 8:50 a.m. PLEASE CHECK IN AT 8:50 a.m. to sign in.

    Learning objectives:

    • Participants will learn and understand the meaning and usage of many commonly used medical terms.
    • Participants will learn how basic components – roots, prefixes and suffixes – are used to build medical terms, and will be able to understand the meaning of many new terms based on their knowledge of commonly used components.
    • Participants will learn specific terminology from different medical specialties such as cardiology, urology, neurology, and gastroenterology.

    Topics covered:

    • General medical terms used across different medical settings.
    • Components of medical terminology: how medical terms are put together.
    • Acronyms, initialisms and eponyms
    • Names of medical specialties
    • Specialty-specific terminology
    • References and Resources

    Teaching approaches:

    • PowerPoint presentation and handouts that present the general terms and components, with review and translation exercises.
    • Video presentation on how medical components are put together to create thousands of terms used in medicine.
    • Interactive discussion. Participants will be called on to answer questions and actively participate in review exercises throughout the webshop.
    • Breakout rooms in Zoom to work on interpreting exercises with colleagues, translating terminology and example sentences.

NOTIS’s Community Interpreter Division (CID) presents:

        What Happened to You?

Healing After Vicarious Trauma for Interpreters
Presented by Marisa Rueda, Will, CHI

        Course Description

Vicarious trauma is a hazard of the job for healthcare workers and community service providers. Medical interpreters are not immune to this risk. However, unlike other healthcare and community service providers, interpreters often do not have a built-in support network they can turn to when they are suffering the effects of work-induced vicarious trauma.

Throughout this three-hour workshop, interpreters will learn how vicarious trauma may have affected them. They will also learn how to recognize their default physical and emotional responses to trauma. By recognizing their default trauma responses, interpreters can begin to understand how their bodies and minds are affected by traumatic events.

Furthermore, interpreters will learn how vicarious trauma can lead to positive and productive growth in the future. Interpreters will be able to understand which behaviors and actions are more likely to lead to healing and resilience. Likewise, they will be able to identify which coping behaviors are more likely to lead to addictive and harmful patterns in the long term.

        Learning Objectives

        1. Identify common initial and delayed responses to trauma and vicarious trauma.
        2. Recognize symptoms associated with vicarious trauma.
        3. Distinguish between healthy and unhealthy coping strategies.
        4. Understand which behaviors and thoughts are more likely to lead to post-traumatic growth.
        5. Share traumatic experiences with interpreting colleagues in a safe space.

        Resources

Each learner will receive the following:

        • Copy of the PowerPoint presentation
        • Link to Post-Traumatic Growth Video
        • Link to Post-Traumatic Growth After Vicarious Trauma Video

        When?
