  The World Health Organization (WHO) Trusted Source estimates that more than 55 million people around the world are living with dementia, so most interpreters are very likely to find themselves interpreting in encounters related to dementia and memory care. This class will introduce the participants to examples of different types of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease, discuss common symptoms, diagnostic tests, and treatments, and discuss why interpreting in encounters related to dementia might be challenging. Participants will engage in skill practice exercises for consecutive interpretation and sight translation.

    - Provide a definition for dementia as an umbrella term for a group of memory disorders
    - Name common symptoms of dementia
    - Provide examples of tests that might be used in diagnosing dementia
    - Identify interpreting challenges when interpreting for in encounters related to dementia and memory care.

  Yuliya Speroff is a Russian-English CoreCHI™ and DSHS-certified healthcare interpreter. Yuliya first started interpreting over 10 years ago in her hometown of Novosibirsk, Russia and has since interpreted in a variety of settings – from a fighter jet factory to a live brain surgery, and most recently at a number of hospitals in Seattle. Yuliya also holds an MA in Business Management and is certified as both an English and a Russian language instructor with more than 10 years of teaching experience. Yuliya’s The Medical Interpreter Blog focuses on providing medical interpreters with resources and information for continuous professional development.

  Workshop Overview: 

  Often, our sense of obligation to the justice system, to language access, or to our role as officers of the court collides with the expectations of unobtrusiveness and impartiality that are fundamental to the profession. This is understandable, as we can be simultaneously defined as interpreters, officers of the court, subject matter experts, independent contractors or court staff. The fact that many of us work in healthcare, community and conference settings can also serve to complicate our ability to respond appropriately to complex situations in the courtroom. 

  The environment outside the courtroom, while perhaps less complicated, also poses challenges for novice and experienced interpreters alike. In the absence of guidance from our code of professional conduct, professional interactions with our peers can be rewarding, frustrating or unclear. 

  What should one do if a colleague is misinterpreting testimony? Or stating on the record that they are certified, when they are not? What if the translated evidence presented by one of the parties is inaccurate? Should you share your opinion about the work of a colleague to one of your clients? Can you ever be a respectable “check” interpreter? Where does the role of the professional interpreter end, and the duty as an officer of the court begin?

  If you have ever wondered how best to respond to challenging situations, inside or outside of the courtroom, this webinar is for you. We will discuss our scope of practice and how to apply our code of professional conduct in various settings. Come learn about our field from a wider perspective, including the repercussions your personal practices can have on your profession and your peers.

  By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Become familiar with guidance regarding our role and scope of practice in the courtroom, specifically, canons 2, 3, 4, 5, and 8 of the Code of Professional Responsibility for Interpreters in the Oregon Courts. 
  • Improve ability to recognize the limits of the interpreter role, whether staff or independent contractor
  • Gain knowledge and skills necessary to respond to challenging situations by proper application of official guidance and professional standards. 
  • Learn whether official guidance from the state courts or professional associations have any bearing on our professional conduct outside of the courtroom

  Melinda Gonzalez-Hibner is an experienced and passionate trainer, and brings an enduring commitment to the wellbeing and professional excellence of interpreting practitioners to her workshops. Currently, she serves as the supervisory interpreter for the U.S. District Court for the District of New Mexico.   Translating Official Documents – What Matters in Personal Legal Documents

  Course Description:

  Translating official legal documents requires different approach than other kinds of translations. Translators working with OLD (Official Legal Documents) have to navigate the requirements of the recipient authority/country. This course will present a unique experience and process that is specific to the instructor's own country of origin (Croatia) but is applicable to any official document translation and in determining the most common requirements in translating OLDs.

  Participants will gain a deeper understanding of procedural stages of working with clients directly, from initial communications to time and fee estimation, translation process, and finally certification of the translation.

  By addressing the common problems, especially when concepts between the original and recipient are not equivalent, participants will enhance their ability to define those concepts of legal translation of official documents and apply them in their work.

  Learning Objectives:

  By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  1. Identify official documents, hearing personal experience related to the Croatian government
  2. Learn how to identify the requirements specific to the recipient authority,
  3. Gain awareness of the steps in the process to better estimate the time and cost of the service they provide,
  4. Improve their ability to identify the significance of specific terminology and social discrepancies between 2 languages and how to handle them
  5. Learn how to provide a notarized and verifiable certification

  Who is teaching? Dubravka Martincic is a Bosnian, Croatian, and Serbian medical and legal interpreter and a translator of personal legal documents. She holds certifications by DSHS and WA State Courts as well as an MA in Teaching English and German Languages and Literature from Croatia. Dubravka’s interpreting career began in Nashville, Tennessee, at Vanderbilt University Hospital, when she was asked to assist with interpreting for Bosnian refugees. Around that time the war in Bosnia brought an influx of refugees to Kentucky and Tennessee, putting interpreting services in high demand. At the same time, a couple of professional, federally certified interpreters started an association called TAPIT (the Tennessee Association of Professional Interpreters and Translators). Dubravka worked closely with the founders of TAPIT, learning invaluable skills, building her freelancing business, and eventually serving as the Association’s president from 2005-2006. In 2006, she moved to Washington State, where she currently lives and works. Dubravka is an avid gardener, cook, and yogini.

  Interpreting for Forensic Evaluations

  Course Description:

  Forensic evaluations are used in many contexts including healthcare settings, legal criminal proceedings, and immigration hearings. A successful forensic evaluation often requires the interviewee to detail uncomfortable and upsetting information about their lives. In this workshop, participants will learn from a physician and a certified medical interpreter about the format, flow, and questions contained in a typical forensic evaluation, as well as best practices for conducting the interview via an interpreter. We will discuss pre-session preparation, tips for establishing rapport, and strategies for working with clients using a trauma-informed approach. The workshop will involve didactic teaching with extensive participant interaction and discussion in addition to a one-hour practice period in which attendees will work on three realistic scenarios the trainers have identified as particularly difficult. Finally, we will conclude with a discussion of additional training resources and ways to get involved in forensic evaluations moving forward.

  • Describe the format and purpose of a Forensic Evaluation
  • Summarize the trauma-informed approach to interpretation during a forensic evaluation
  • Describe challenges for interpreters and providers

  Who is teaching? 
  
  Robin Ragan is a professor of Spanish at Knox College in Illinois, teaching in a translation and interpreter training program designed by her. She earned her CMI-Spanish since 2016, and is a Illinois state court interpreter as well. In 2020 she earned the Global Engagement Initiative Award from the American Council on Teachers of Foreign Languages Global for her translation and interpreting program at Knox, and a Humanities Innovation Grant from the Modern Languages Association to support new coursework on “Interpreting for Crisis Contexts in Immigration”. Robin is also a collaborator with Americans Against Language Barriers where she trains future medical interpreters and frequently teaches units on Modes, Roles, Ethics and Vicarious Trauma. She interprets for psychosocial evaluations on a weekly basis through her work with immigrant populations and asylum seekers.

  Jordan Greenbaum, MD is the former medical director of the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children, and past medical director of the Stephanie Blank Center for Safe and Healthy Children at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. She is a retired child abuse physician living in Atlanta, GA. Dr. Greenbaum is a board member of the International Society on the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN) and a past president of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children. She has provided training and technical assistance to international school staff, health and mental health professionals, as well as social workers, law enforcement officers and prosecutors globally to improve the community response to child abuse, exploitation, and trafficking. She provides training and technical assistance regarding the trauma-informed, rights-based approach to interacting with children and families who have experienced trauma related to sexual, physical or community violence, and forced migration. Dr. Greenbaum assisted in the creation of the material for this training and is a co-trainer.

  Interpreting for Postpartum Care

  Obstetric care does not end after a baby is delivered. Interpreters are often called to interpret for new mothers in the postpartum unit to discuss lactation, feeding, newborn screening, newborn cares, and postpartum care. This education is comprehensive and may take hours. Like any specialty area, postpartum teaching has its own terminology. Additionally, you will hear about how this care is different for women who have experienced a pregnancy loss.  

  During this session, you will discover the current methods and terminology utilized when interpreting for patients who have recently given birth. You will also hear about how these methods have changed over the last ten years and what this means for the goals of the encounter.  

  In true Tica Interpreter Education fashion, you will also hear stories about women who willingly share their postpartum journeys. These stories will help you understand how each new mother faces their own joys and struggles. Postpartum care varies depending on the patient and their needs. These stories will give you concrete examples to make the information shared poignant and memorable. After attending this session, you will be prepared to work with a variety of postpartum patients.
    

  

  • Identify common postpartum cares and become familiar with terminology when interpreting for these encounters.  

  • Learn about postpartum care to nontraditional pregnancy journeys, including pregnancy loss and/or labor and delivery complications.  

  • Recognize how education regarding newborn screening and lactation have changed over the last decade.  

  • Reflect on and/or discuss your experience interpreting for postpartum encounters with other medical interpreters.  

  • Acknowledge how your role as a professional interpreter increases positive patient outcomes by providing clear communication between the patient and provider.

  Marisa Rueda Will graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Luther College in 2006. She has been a medical interpreter at a major U.S. medical center for over 15 years. She became a Certified Healthcare Interpreter-Spanish in 2012 and a Licensed Interpreter Trainer through Cross Cultural Communications in 2017. In 2020, she became a Simulation Center Instructor. She is also a member of the NCIHC Webinars Work Group. In 2022, she was invited to present at the CHIA and ATA Conferences. Marisa specializes in education through storytelling. She has a special interest in providing education about interpreting for OB, mental health, and end of life encounters.

This two-hour class uses the format of the game show “Jeopardy!” to meet your one-credit ethics requirement for DSHS as well as to get you thinking about how the DSHS Code of Conduct applies to real-life situations. Join veteran interpreter trainer Cindy Roat for a fun and ethical workshop!

  
  

  Learning objectives:
  

  At the conclusion of this class, participants will be able to:

  • Name the 12 canons of the DSHS Code of Conduct

  • Identify which canon applies to a given circumstance in healthcare or social service interpreting.

  • Use the principles of the canons to the given circumstances to describe an appropriate response in the given circumstances.

  This class is a redesign of the very popular Ethics Jeopardy! class approved by LTC in 2023. As so many interpreters have asked to retake the class for their annual ethics credit, the class has been redesigned, using the same Jeopardy template but changing the questions and answers. This short class will still begin with a quick review of the canons of the DSHS Code of Conduct. Then, as in the previous version, the participants will be split into two teams to play a game using the Jeopardy format to challenge their memory of the canons and their ability to apply the canons to specific interpreting challenges. The questions, however, will be different, as will the specific interpreting challenges presented.

  This workshop will not be recorded. To earn continuing education credits, you must attend the live webinar in its entirety.

With an MPH in International Health Services, Cindy has made significant contributions to the healthcare interpreting field in the areas of training, program development, policy formulation, advocacy, and organizational outreach. Her written works are key resources for interpreters, providers, and administrators alike. Cindy was the principal author of the original Bridging the Gap, and her most recent book, Healthcare Interpreting in Small Bites, is being used as an ancillary text at many basic training programs.

  The goal of this two-hour workshop is to educate interpreters on the DSHS Code of Professional Conduct.  Participants will walk through the Code of Conduct and then apply it to real-life scenarios that have been submitted to NOTIS. For each scenario, the participants will be asked to reflect on whether they have faced a similar situation, what did they do at the time, what portion(s) of the DSHS Code of Conduct apply to the given scenario, and what are some appropriate options for addressing the scenario in light of the Code of Conduct. Participants will also be made aware of other Codes of Conduct that guide ethical interpreter practice (e.g. NCIHC, WA AOC, etc.)  
   

  

  1. Understand the DSHS Code of Professional Conduct: Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the DSHS Code of Conduct and its application to professional interpreting practice.

  2. Apply Ethical Principles to Real-Life Scenarios: Participants will analyze real-life scenarios, identify applicable sections of the DSHS Code of Conduct, and evaluate appropriate responses to ethical challenges.

She holds a Master of Arts in Spanish (Linguistics) and has significant experience in interpreting, translating and training. Yvonne is a DSHS Certified Spanish Medical Interpreter and is a Certified Medical Interpreter through the National Board. She began her professional interpreting career in 2006 as a staff interpreter at a Level 1 Trauma Center in Phoenix, Arizona. Yvonne values her work advocating for language access as a human right.

  Cindy Roat is a national consultant and trainer with 29 years’ experience in the healthcare interpreting field. With an MPH in International Health Services, Cindy has made significant contributions to the healthcare interpreting field in the areas of training, program development, policy formulation, advocacy, and organizational outreach. Her written works are key resources for interpreters, providers, and administrators alike. Cindy was the principal author of the original Bridging the Gap, and her most recent book, Healthcare Interpreting in Small Bites, is being used as an ancillary text at many basic training programs.

  • Ugly Sweater Contest - wear your most audacious seasonal sweater for the chance to dethrone last year's winner!
  • Cozy Dessert Competition - prepare your favorite cold-weather treat to showcase your culinary abilities and enter to win a prize
  • Performances* - an opportunity to show off your talents! Do you sing, play an instrument, juggle, or dance? Have you got another special skill you’d like to share?
