General Principles of Editing

This in-person engaging workshop will provide a practical approach to the essential principles of editing, tailored for both language-neutral contexts and English/Spanish translation.

Morning (9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.): General principles of editing – language neutral
We will discuss:

  • General requirements for editors

  • An overview of the different stages of editing

  • The levels of editing that apply to translators in each stage of editing.

  • Consequences of not providing proper editing procedures with a translation.

  • Preparing a style guide for our use with a document.

These topics will be covered from a practical perspective, with excercises.

Afternoon (1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.): General Principles of Editing – For English/Spanish translators

Specific topics that may be covered:

  • Adaptation to a new audience when translating to Spanish

  • Differences between English and Spanish in:

  • Punctuation

  • Verb conjugation

  • Sentence structure

These topics will be covered from a practical perspective, with exercises.

Certificates of Attendance will be awarded to all who arrive on time and stay for the entire workshop. Please allow yourself enough time to get to the site, find parking and sign in before the workshop begins. While latecomers are welcome to stay for the educational value of the workshop, DSHS/AOC will not provide CE credit if you arrive late, for any

reason.

Workshop participants should bring a laptop if possible.
