NOTIS Community Interpreters Division and

Seattle Cancer Care Alliance present:

Deep Dive into Cultural Competence

Second weekend closure will have regional traffic effect:

Northbound I-5 reduced to two lanes through the weekend of April 28-29

Check traffic websites to see if the on- and off-ramps you need to take will be closed.

This four-hour highly interactive class addresses very personal topics. Come prepared to take a walk through your own cultural landscape and think about how to manage that landscape when you are interpreting. We will look at how to assess and respond to the cultural landscapes of the patient, the family, the care providers, and the overarching Bio-Medical environment.

We will also practice cultural interventions, partnering with the care team to support them in engaging fully with the patient. A key goal of the class is to learn mechanisms to avoid ever speaking for the patient, but rather how to suggest to the parties that perhaps more communication about cultural underpinnings of the conversation would be useful.

Bring a pen and a clipboard or hard surface to write on, as we will carry out extensive self-inspection throughout the class and will document our findings on the handout.
