Sleep Physiology, Disorders, and Treatments for Medical Interpreters - Interpret sleep-related conditions and treatments with clarity and confidence in medical settings

What is it about?
This three-hour course is designed for healthcare interpreters and other language access professionals seeking to deepen their understanding of sleep physiology, disorders, and treatment pathways encountered in medical interpreting settings.

Class Description:
Sleep is one of the foundations of good health and well-being. Throughout centuries, people have struggled to achieve better sleep, often using harmful and addictive substances. Today’s modern medicine has made significant progress in explaining how sleep works, how we fall asleep, what happens if we don’t get enough sleep, and how to get better sleep.

We will start with some basic definitions of sleep, walk through the stages of sleep, emphasize the importance of sleep, and touch on the fascinating world of dreams. In the next section, we will discuss sleep disorders like obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, nightmare disorders, and PTSD.

After we wrap up the presentation, there will be a quick knowledge-check session with 12 questions (attached) to reinforce our understanding of key concepts discussed in the training. This will be followed by three real-life, interactive practice scenarios. The first one is an appointment between the medical provider and the patient seeking help for insomnia. The second one is between the pharmacist and the patient’s wife, who is trying to pick up his prescription. The third scenario is the telephone call between the health insurance representative and the patient’s daughter, discussing some steps on how to get the coverage for the needed medicine. All three scenarios are based on my own everyday work as a language interpreter. At the close of the training session, we will have a quick Q&A session. The participants can ask questions while being encouraged to do their own research and enhance their knowledge base on sleep through self-guided learning.

After our three-hour journey into the realm of sleep, participants will be able to:

Identify mechanisms, engineering, and physiology of sleep: stages of sleep, REM and non-REM sleep, sleep deprivation, dreaming, and dreams
Be familiar with the most common sleep disorders, including SDB, insomnia, and PTSD-related nightmares
Recognize treatments and pathways to better sleep, including prescription and over-the-counter sleeping aids, devices, gadgets, and sleep hygiene
Strengthen medical interpreting skills by practicing real-life healthcare scenarios
Enhance their interpreting vocabulary and become more proficient in interpreting sessions dealing with sleep disorders

Participants will receive:

Full presentation content with slides 1–33
Glossary of terms covered in the presentation
Comprehensive list of source materials
Practice scenarios for consecutive interpreting, between the provider, pharmacist, insurance representative, and sleep-deprived patient and their family members.

Nada Conner had enjoyed being a language interpreter for over 30 years. She began her interpreting career in the Air Force Training Center in Tripoli, Libya, where she facilitated communications as Arabic interpreter for Libyan Air Force instructors and trainees. Her next career move was Iraq, where she worked on several military construction sites as well as in Baghdad Headquarters. After that, she worked as a Language Assistant for United Nations Protection Forces in Croatia, during the tumultuous period of unrest in the region. Since then, she has been working as a freelance interpreter and translator for district courts throughout Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and beyond. She is a remote interpreter for several large language interpreting agencies, working very hard every day to help LEP’s get the best possible communications outcome and easily access resources that may otherwise be difficult or impossible. A native of Serbia, Nada graduated from University of Belgrade with B.A. degree in languages and literature. She is a certified court interpreter by AOC in Washington State, and also WA DSHS Medical and Social Services authorized interpreter for Bosnian, Serbian, and Croatian languages. She lives in Bellingham with five beautiful rabbits.

Diabetes is a serious health condition that affects over 34 million Americans. Diabetes can have serious long-term effects on patients’ health and lead to severe complications. Management and treatment of diabetes may involve a team of medical professionals — from endocrinologists to mental health specialists, as well as the patient and their family.

This class is designed to help interpreters prepare for interpreting in encounters related to diabetes care — whether it’s an insulin injection education session or a dialysis discussion. The class will cover:

Rose Cano is a a Spanish-language diabetes navigator working in the Interpreter Services Department (ISD) at Harborview Medical Center/UW Medicine in Seattle, WA. Rose has worked at Harborview for 4 years, initially as medical interpreter staff and more recently in the role of navigator for a grant-funded initiative aiming to improve Spanish and Somali patients’ management of diabetes. The Interpreter Services Department at Harborview provides interpretation to patients in over 90 languages via in-person, telephonic and video modalities and contributes to the health and well-being of refugee and immigrant patients, families and communities through a continuum of other programs of cross-cultural care and education. As diabetes navigator, Rose serves as a cultural broker/mediator between Spanish-speaking patients and health providers in order to ensure culturally congruent care. She also helps patients and their families navigate the complexity of the hospital and health care system. She has a passion for storytelling and “narrative medicine”, and strives to make sure that the patient’s perspective of the world is included in the provider’s assessment and treatment plan.

Yuliya Speroff is a Russian-English CoreCHI™ and DSHS-certified healthcare interpreter. Yuliya first started interpreting over 10 years ago in her hometown of Novosibirsk, Russia and has since interpreted in a variety of settings – from a fighter jet factory to a live brain surgery, and most recently at a number of hospitals in Seattle. Yuliya also holds an MA in Business Management and is certified as both an English and a Russian language instructor with more than 10 years of teaching experience. Yuliya’s The Medical Interpreter Blog focuses on providing medical interpreters with resources and information for continuous professional development.

Many, if not most, of the ethical mistakes made by interpreters tends to come from a place of trying to be helpful, polite, or supportive. But the unintended consequence may be an ethical violation. Understanding role boundaries clearly can help interpreters navigate the waters of customer service in a way that consistently upholds the Code of Ethics.

This webinar will explore all of the above. Scripts will be shared for positive, professional interaction, and breakout room sessions will offer the opportunity for attendees to practice.

Attendees will learn to describe:

What a code of ethics is
Why a code of ethics exists for every health profession
What the interpreter code of ethics covers

Handouts: We will have a Venn diagram activity for attendees to compare the codes of ethics and then report back on ethics held in common. Please print them prior to the workshop or have them ready on another device.

Death and Interpreting: How We Die and End-Of-Life Care in Healthcare Settings

What is this about?
This three-hour webinar is designed for healthcare interpreters and other language professionals who want to expand their understanding of the process of dying, end-of-life support, palliative care, next-of-kin, brain death, autopsy, and burial methods. This course focuses on applying interpreting skills in real-life healthcare encounters.

Course Description
This course is a comprehensive, in-depth training about the process of dying. It explains biological and brain death, how death is determined, who can determine death, life support measures, palliative care, as well as autopsy and burial methods.

Death has always been a subject that people may find difficult to discuss. In this course, we approach the topic from a practical and professional perspective, exploring how death is defined medically and legally, and what interpreters need to know when working in these settings. Topics include end-of-life support, palliative care, brain death, next-of-kin, and medical assistance in dying (MAID), as well as cause and manner of death and post-death procedures.

After This Workshop, Participants Will Be Able To:

Identify key mechanisms involved in the process of dying and how death is determined
Become familiar with hospice and palliative care, and distinguish between in-home and facility hospice
Define life support measures, including CPR, mechanical ventilation, defibrillation, and artificial nutrition and hydration
Distinguish between DNR and DNI
Describe the concept of next-of-kin
Apply medical interpreting skills in real-life healthcare situations
Use complex terminology accurately in challenging encounters
Handle sensitive conversations with professionalism while maintaining appropriate role boundaries

Who is teaching?

Nada Conner has more than 30 years of experience as an interpreter, translator, and language professional. Her career has included interpreting for the Libyan Air Force, military construction projects in Iraq, the United Nations Protection Forces in Croatia, and state and federal courts throughout Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and beyond.

A native of Serbia, Nada holds a B.A. in Languages and Literature from the University of Belgrade. Healing After Vicarious Trauma for Interpreters

Course Description:
Vicarious trauma is a hazard of the job for healthcare workers and community service providers. Medical interpreters are not immune to this risk. However, unlike other healthcare and community service providers, interpreters often do not have a built-in support network they can turn to when they are suffering the effects of work-induced vicarious trauma.

Throughout this three-hour workshop, interpreters will learn how vicarious trauma may have affected them. They will also learn how to recognize their default physical and emotional responses to trauma. By recognizing their default trauma responses, interpreters can begin to understand how their bodies and minds are affected by traumatic events.

Furthermore, interpreters will learn how vicarious trauma can lead to positive and productive growth in the future. Interpreters will be able to understand which behaviors and actions are more likely to lead to healing and resilience. Likewise, they will be able to identify which coping behaviors are more likely to lead to addictive and harmful patterns in the long term.

Learning Objectives:

Identify common initial and delayed responses to trauma and vicarious trauma.
Recognize symptoms associated with vicarious trauma.
Distinguish between healthy and unhealthy coping strategies.
Understand which behaviors and thoughts are more likely to lead to post-traumatic growth.
Share traumatic experiences with interpreting colleagues in a safe space.

Who is teaching?

Marisa Rueda Will graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Luther College in 2006. She has been a medical interpreter at a major U.S. medical center for over 15 years. She became a Certified Healthcare Interpreter-Spanish in 2012 and a Licensed Interpreter Trainer through Cross Cultural Communications in 2017. In 2020, she became a Simulation Center Instructor. She is also a member of the NCIHC Webinars Work Group. In 2022, she was invited to present at the CHIA and ATA Conferences. Marisa specializes in education through storytelling. She has a special interest in providing education about interpreting for OB, mental health, and end of life encounters.

What is it about?

Bridges, dams, abutments, and anchors – are you interpreting in construction? No! It’s dentistry, and the vocabulary alone can pose some real, um, “concrete” challenges.

This 8-hour webshop will prepare participants to provide interpreting services for five types of dental care: dental hygiene, restorations, extractions, prosthodontics (dentures and implants), and oral surgery. The class will also include basic oral anatomy and a discussion of specific challenges for interpreters serving in dental venues.

Taught in presenter Cindy Roat’s signature style mixing lecture, polls, games, and exercises (plus lots of really bad puns), this class is designed for experienced interpreters and advanced learners. The class will move quickly, covering a lot of material in a short time.

Participants will receive:

A copy of the PowerPoint presentation.
An English vocabulary exercise for each of the first five dental topics
A conversion exercise for each topic

Course Description: Despite a commonly held belief, migraines are more than just headaches; they are complex neurological disorders that can significantly impact a patient’s quality of life - and even impede their ability to see, speak or move during an attack. This specialized course is designed for medical interpreters seeking to deepen their understanding of migraine, a prevalent neurological disorder affecting millions worldwide. As a medical interpreter, their role is crucial in ensuring that patients receive accurate and empathetic care, particularly when dealing with complex conditions like migraine. This course will equip participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively interpret medical consultations, diagnoses, and treatment plans related to migraine. By preparing to interpret in encounters related to migraine diagnosis and management, medical interpreters will play a vital role in enhancing patient care, reducing medical errors, and contributing to better health outcomes for those suffering from this debilitating condition.

Learning Goals: After attending this class, the participants will be familiar with:

Definition of migraine
Common types of migraine disorder
The specific medical terminology and phrases commonly used to describe migraine symptoms and manifestations, complications, common treatment options, anatomy and physiology of areas of the brain and the body affected by this disorder

The participants will also have an opportunity to integrate new terminology into their practice by engaging in interpreting skill development activities, such as sight translation and consecutive interpretation exercise.

The class materials were reviewed by Nicholas Karagas MD/PhD, Department of Neurology, UW Medicine.

The class was expanded to a 2-hour class with inclusion of interpreting skills development activities, such as sight translation exercises and consecutive interpretation dialogues.

Course Description: This is a 4-hour workshop designed for medical interpreters and translators who work with patients who are undergoing surgery or have heart problems. Medications used in surgical settings are critical for patient safety and the success of procedures. This session will guide language professionals through the terminology and communication challenges associated with surgeryrelated medications, including anesthetics, analgesics, muscle relaxants, and anticoagulants used to manage surgical risks.

Additionally, learners are introduced to cardiac medications and the challenges interpreters and translators face in conveying complex terminology accurately. Through engaging stories, practical scenarios, and interactive exercises, participants will gain deeper knowledge of cardiovascular treatments, medication adherence, and strategies to enhance patient-provider communication. This webinar explores essential cardiac medications used for conditions such as hypertension, heart failure, arrhythmias, and anticoagulation therapy. Topics include beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, and anticoagulants, their functions, side effects, and patient adherence considerations.

Identify and define key cardiac medication classes, such as betablockers, ACE inhibitors, and anticoagulants, to accurately interpret healthcare provider instructions.
Develop strategies to navigate terminology challenges and ensure accurate interpretation of cardiac medication discussions.
