NOTIS’ Community Interpreters Division presents

Interpreting for IEPs and beyond: the role of social service interpreters in schools

Presented by Fanny Cordero

What is it about?

IEP, SDI, PWN, BASC, SBA, LRE, SLD, CELF, ELA, TEXL, IDEA, FAPE….

These are some of the acronyms that are commonly used when interpreting for IEP meetings in public schools. Just as in medical interpreting, interpreting for Education encounters requires that interpreters invest some time learning terminology used in Special Education IEP meetings in public schools for grades K-12.

This 2-hour interactive class will introduce participants to the Individualized Education Program (IEP) and address spoken language interpretation for IEP meetings in public school grades K-12.

Objectives for this class:

1)      Introduction to the IEP and IEP Timeline

2)      Overview of what happens at IEP meetings.

3)      Explore interpretation strategies and challenges. Practice with provided scripts in breakout groups.

4)      View a list of suggested resources for preparation and continued study.
