NOTIS’ Community Interpreters Division presents
WEBSHOP: Mindful Wellness for Translators and Interpreters
Presented by Svetlana Ruth
Emotional exhaustion, compassion fatigue, stress, vicarious trauma alter our abilities and livelihood. Both translators and interpreters experience challenges in their professional encounters. In this interactive presentation we will discuss "the good, the bad, and the ugly”, as well as self care techniques and opportunities for immediate support and long term options.
The 2-hour interactive workshop will begin with a review of what vicarious trauma is and how it affects our ability to perform professional duties. A guided discussion will take place of what factors influence our well being and how we respond to stress. Participants will identify strategies for self-protection from occupational hazards and create an action plan. Participants will then learn several techniques on preventing trauma, dealing with trauma during an encounter, and recovering from trauma after the encounter. Discussion and practice will be offered in small groups after a 5-minute break. Participants will adopt the strategies and techniques that are beneficial to them and incorporate those into their personal care plan.
By the end of the training, participants will be able to:
• Identify stressors in their professional field
• Apply effective strategies to prevent burn out
• Implement appropriate techniques to recover from trauma and stress.
What is a Webshop? A webshop is just like an interactive onsite class, but held online through Zoom. During a webshop, you can ask questions and engage in discussion. You may be divided into “break-out” rooms where you’ll be working with other participants on exercises or on practicing a skill. There may be quizzes and polls. So, while there may be some PowerPoint and lecture, this is not like your typical webinar. Your full attention and participation is expected; that’s what makes it fun!
