NOTIS’s Community Interpreter Division (CID) presents:
Interpreting for OB/GYN
Presented by Marisa Rueda, Will, CHI
Course Description:
Approximately 10% of individuals struggle with infertility problems. The chances are that you know someone who has been affected by difficulty trying to conceive or have a baby. Unlike many medical specialties, reproductive endocrinology is rarely covered by medical insurance. Most patients who seek these treatments have saved for years to see a specialist that can help them try to conceive and have a pregnancy that ends in a live birth.
The stakes are high for limited English proficient patients who seek this type of medical care. It is imperative these patients receive accurate information from an interpreter who understands the physical, emotional, and financial struggles they have endured to receive this care.
During this four-hour webinar, interpreters will hear from a patient, named Sarah, who has experienced infertility struggles. Sarah will share about her struggles with polycystic ovary syndrome which caused her difficulty conceiving a child. She will share about the hardships she and her husband experienced throughout their infertility journey. You will also get a chance to practice what it would be like to interpret for a patient like Sarah through guided consecutive interpreting practice.
Learning Objectives
- Understand how infertility is defined in women and men by reproductive endocrinology specialists.
- Recognize commonly used infertility treatments in a stepwise approach.
- Distinguish between the physical, emotional, and financial challenges patients’ face while trying to conceive.
- Identify medical conditions that are often associated with infertility problems.
- Practice interpreting complex human reproduction topics with dialogues based on a patient’s personal experience.
