NOTIS’ Community Interpreters Division presents

Best Practices for Ethical Dilemmas

Presented by Svetlana Ruth

What is it about? Medical interpreters face challenging situations every day, and they must make decisions on how to handle those situations instantly. The workshop will begin with a review of the Code of Conduct for medical interpreters published by WA DSHS. Participants will discuss a variety of scenarios from real life, share their experience and suggestions on how to best handle each situation in small groups, and discuss ethical considerations and possible outcomes in a large group. Then participants will choose best practices after gathering all the suggestions. Analyzing different options guided by the Code of Conduct will broaden interpreter ’s repertoire of practical solutions to dilemmas.

By then end of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Have a better understanding of what ethical principles guide specific decisions
  • Apply effective strategies of choosing best practices for different situations based on the WA DSHS Code of Conduct
  • Improve quick critical thinking analysis for decision-making in healthcare setting
