NOTIS’s Community Interpreters Division presents:
Everyday Ethics for Interpreters: Lessons from Real-World Situations
Presented by Yvonne Simpson

The goal of this two-hour workshop is to educate interpreters on the DSHS Code of Professional Conduct. Participants will walk through the Code of Conduct and then apply it to real-life scenarios that have been submitted to NOTIS. For each scenario, the participants will be asked to reflect on whether they have faced a similar situation, what did they do at the time, what portion(s) of the DSHS Code of Conduct apply to the given scenario, and what are some appropriate options for addressing the scenario in light of the Code of Conduct. Participants will also be made aware of other Codes of Conduct that guide ethical interpreter practice (e.g. NCIHC, WA AOC, etc.)

-
Understand the DSHS Code of Professional Conduct: Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the DSHS Code of Conduct and its application to professional interpreting practice.
-
Apply Ethical Principles to Real-Life Scenarios: Participants will analyze real-life scenarios, identify applicable sections of the DSHS Code of Conduct, and evaluate appropriate responses to ethical challenges.
-
Explore Other Relevant Codes of Conduct: Participants will become familiar with additional Codes of Conduct, such as those from NCIHC and WA AOC, to broaden their understanding of ethical standards in the interpreting profession.
Here is a list of links to the Code of Ethics used in the workshop.
