   NOTIS’s Community Interpreters Division presents:

  Interpreting for Cancer Genetics 
  Presented by Cindy Roat

   
  This seven-hour class prepares interpreters to provide accurate interpreting for encounters in which cancer genetics is being discussed. An interactive PowerPoint presentation interspersed with quizzes and polls is followed by exercises with English vocabulary and exercises in converting English cancer genetics sentences into a non-English language. Bilingual cancer genetics glossaries are provided in English-Spanish, English-Russian, and English-Traditional Chinese. Accredited for 6.5 credits with CCHI, 0.7 credits with IMIA, and 7 credits with DSHS.

  
  

  
  A webshop is just like an interactive onsite class, but held online through Zoom. During a webshop, you can ask questions and engage in discussion. You may be divided into “break-out” rooms where you’ll be working with other participants on exercises or on practicing a skill. There may be quizzes and polls. So, while there may be some PowerPoint and lecture, this is not like your typical webinar. Your full attention and participation is expected; that’s what makes it fun!

  Enhance your interpreting skills in addiction services with our 4-hour online workshop designed for experienced interpreters, providing comprehensive training on addiction, treatment options, and specialized terminology to support patients, families, and providers.

  

  
  This is a 4-hour synchronous online workshop, designed for experienced interpreters, that will prepare learners to provide interpreting services for patients being seen at Addiction Services, their families and the providers who serve them.

  Learning objectives:

  After taking this class, participants will be able to:

  • Define addiction and differentiate between addiction and physical dependence.

  • Describe the key types of substance use disorder treatment, including medically based treatment, counseling and harm reduction strategies.
  • Accurately interpret common terms and utterances commonly used in communications around substance use diagnosis and treatment in medical and social service settings.
    
    

  Topics:
  

  • Introduction to addiction and substance use disorder, including the diagnostic process and treatment options.
  • What interpreters can expect at medical and social service with patients and families who are living with substance use disorder.
  • Specialized terminology in addiction services commonly used in medical and social service settings.
  • Practice with vocabulary and linguistic conversion between English and a non-English language.

  Interpreting for Forensic Evaluations
  Presented by Robin Ragan and Jordan Greenbaum

  
  

  Course Description:

  Forensic evaluations are used in many contexts including healthcare settings, legal criminal proceedings, and immigration hearings. A successful forensic evaluation often requires the interviewee to detail uncomfortable and upsetting information about their lives. In this workshop, participants will learn from a physician and a certified medical interpreter about the format, flow, and questions contained in a typical forensic evaluation, as well as best practices for conducting the interview via an interpreter. We will discuss pre-session preparation, tips for establishing rapport, and strategies for working with clients using a trauma-informed approach. The workshop will involve didactic teaching with extensive participant interaction and discussion in addition to a one-hour practice period in which attendees will work on three realistic scenarios the trainers have identified as particularly difficult. Finally, we will conclude with a discussion of additional training resources and ways to get involved in forensic evaluations moving forward.

  • Describe the format and purpose of a Forensic Evaluation

  Who is teaching? 
  
  Robin Ragan is a professor of Spanish at Knox College in Illinois, teaching in a translation and interpreter training program designed by her. She earned her CMI-Spanish since 2016, and is a Illinois state court interpreter as well. In 2020 she earned the Global Engagement Initiative Award from the American Council on Teachers of Foreign Languages Global for her translation and interpreting program at Knox, and a Humanities Innovation Grant from the Modern Languages Association to support new coursework on “Interpreting for Crisis Contexts in Immigration”. Robin is also a collaborator with Americans Against Language Barriers where she trains future medical interpreters and frequently teaches units on Modes, Roles, Ethics and Vicarious Trauma. She interprets for psychosocial evaluations on a weekly basis through her work with immigrant populations and asylum seekers.

  Jordan Greenbaum, MD is the former medical director of the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children, and past medical director of the Stephanie Blank Center for Safe and Healthy Children at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. She is a retired child abuse physician living in Atlanta, GA. Dr. Greenbaum is a board member of the International Society on the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN) and a past president of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children. She has provided training and technical assistance to international school staff, health and mental health professionals, as well as social workers, law enforcement officers and prosecutors globally to improve the community response to child abuse, exploitation, and trafficking. She provides training and technical assistance regarding the trauma-informed, rights-based approach to interacting with children and families who have experienced trauma related to sexual, physical or community violence, and forced migration. Dr. Greenbaum assisted in the creation of the material for this training and is a co-trainer.

  Ethical Conundrums in Medical Interpreting

   Many, if not most, of the ethical mistakes made by interpreters tends to come from a place of trying to be helpful, polite, or supportive. But the unintended consequence may be an ethical violation. Understanding role boundaries clearly can help interpreters navigate the waters of customer service in a way that consistently upholds the Code of Ethics. 
  This webshop will explore all of the above. Scripts will be shared for positive, professional interaction, and breakout room sessions will offer the opportunity for attendees to practice.

  Attendees will learn to describe:

  • What a code of ethics is
  • Why a code of ethics exists for every health profession
  • What the interpreter code of ethics covers

  
  Handouts: We will have a Venn diagram activity for attendees to compare the codes of ethics and then report back on ethics held in common. Please print them prior to the workshop or have them ready on another device.

  • Inheritance patterns: autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, X-linked, mitochondrial

  Who is teaching?

  Megan Yabumoto (she/her) is a pediatric genetic counselor in Medical Genetics at Seattle Children’s Hospital (SCH) where she sees patients in the general genetics, skeletal dysplasias, and epilepsy genetics clinics. Megan graduated from Stanford University School of Medicine with a Master’s degree in Human Genetic and Genetic Counseling in 2022. Megan, Ernesto, and other colleagues have been partnering with the in-house interpreter and translation services at SCH to better bridge the gap in understanding of common and complex genetics topics.

  
  

  

  Ernesto Marquez Montes (he/him) graduated in Spring of 2024 from the University of Washington with his Master’s in Genetic Counseling. Currently, he works as a bilingual children and family counselor in community services. He also has experience working with neurodiverse individuals and is passionate about making services accessible.   Diabetes is a serious health condition that affects over 34 million Americans. Diabetes can have serious long-term effects on patients’ health and lead to severe complications. Management and treatment of diabetes may involve a team of medical professionals - from endocrinologist to mental health specialists, as well as the patient and their family. 

  This class is designed to help interpreters prepare for interpreting in encounters related to diabetes care - whether it’s an insulin injection education session or a dialysis discussion.  The class will cover: 
  

  • Definition of diabetes and related physiology 
  • Common types of diabetes 
  • How diabetes is diagnosed 
  • Common approaches to treating diabetes 
  • Complications of diabetes 
  • Challenges for interpreters 
  • Terminology and interpreting skills practice

  A webshop is just like an interactive onsite class, but held online through Zoom. During a webshop, you can ask questions and engage in discussion. You may be divided into “break-out” rooms where you’ll be working with other participants on exercises or on practicing a skill. There may be quizzes and polls.   Rose Cano is a Spanish-language diabetes navigator working in the Interpreter Services Department (ISD) at Harborview Medical Center/UW Medicine in Seattle, WA.  Rose has worked at Harborview for 4 years, initially as medical interpreter staff and more recently in the role of navigator for a grant-funded initiative aiming to improve Spanish and Somali patients’ management of diabetes.  The Interpreter Services Department at Harborview provides interpretation to patients in over 90 languages via in-person, telephonic and video modalities and contributes to the health and well-being of refugee and immigrant patients, families and communities through a continuum of other programs of cross-cultural care and education. As diabetes navigator, Rose serves as a cultural broker/mediator between Spanish-speaking patients and health providers in order to ensure culturally congruent care.  She also helps patients and their families navigate the complexity of the hospital and health care system. She has a passion for storytelling and “narrative medicine”, and strives to make sure that the patient’s perspective of the world is included in the provider’s assessment and treatment plan.

  
   Yuliya Speroff  is a Russian-English CoreCHI™ and DSHS-certified healthcare interpreter. Yuliya first started interpreting over 10 years ago in her hometown of Novosibirsk, Russia and has since interpreted in a variety of settings – from a fighter jet factory to a live brain surgery, and most recently at a number of hospitals in Seattle. Yuliya also holds an MA in Business Management and is certified as both an English and a Russian language instructor with more than 10 years of teaching experience. Yuliya’s The Medical Interpreter Blog focuses on providing medical interpreters with resources and information for continuous professional development.

  Scholarly texts occupy an ambiguous space between the literary and the technical. Their translation demands keen research skills to track down obscure quotations, detailed work on footnotes and bibliographies, terminological consistency, subject-matter expertise, and a specialized vocabulary. Yet the prose of these texts frequently demands the rich cultural and intellectual background and writerly talents that only a literary translator can provide. Scholarly translators also dwell in a different publishing environment with its own challenges and opportunities.

  Join us for this presentation by a professional translator who works on both technical and literary texts to discuss the special challenges and working conditions of this translation sub-species and define its taxonomy: platypus or unicorn?

  Zakiya Hanafi (PhD, Stanford) is an independent scholar and professional translator of French and Italian into English, specializing in academic works on literature, history, and philosophy. In 2023 she was awarded the prestigious MLA Scaglione Prize for a Translation of a Scholarly Study of Literature for her work on Guido Mazzoni’s On Modern Poetry (Harvard UP). Her own book, The Monster in the Machine: Magic, Medicine, and the Marvelous in the Time of the Scientific Revolution was published in 2000 by Duke UP. With more than a dozen translated books to her name, she is keen to start a dialogue on the space of the scholarly translator and its place among the greater translation community.

  Vicarious trauma is a hazard of the job for healthcare workers and community service providers. Medical interpreters are not immune to this risk. However, unlike other healthcare and community service providers, interpreters often do not have a built-in support network they can turn to when they are suffering the effects of work-induced vicarious trauma.

  Throughout this three-hour workshop, interpreters will learn how vicarious trauma may have affected them. They will also learn how to recognize their default physical and emotional responses to trauma. By recognizing their default trauma responses, interpreters can begin to understand how their bodies and minds are affected by traumatic events.

  Furthermore, interpreters will learn how vicarious trauma can lead to positive and productive growth in the future. Interpreters will be able to understand which behaviors and actions are more likely to lead to healing and resilience. Likewise, they will be able to identify which coping behaviors are more likely to lead to addictive and harmful patterns in the long term.

  1. Identify common initial and delayed responses to trauma and vicarious trauma.
  2. Recognize symptoms associated with vicarious trauma.
  3. Distinguish between healthy and unhealthy coping strategies.
  4. Understand which behaviors and thoughts are more likely to lead to post-traumatic growth.
  5. Share traumatic experiences with interpreting colleagues in a safe space.

  Marisa Rueda Will graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Luther College in 2006. She has been a medical interpreter at a major U.S. medical center for over 15 years.   **Credit Information for DSHS Interpreters:** Interpreters may complete the Gateway ethics quiz annually to earn ethics credits. However, please note that an actual class on ethics will not count towards credit more than once in a four-year cycle, as per LTC regulations.

  NOTIS issues proof of continuing education at the time it is earned. NOTIS does not guarantee the replacement of lost certificates.

  

  

  Cindy Roat is a national consultant and trainer with 29 years’ experience in the healthcare interpreting field. With an MPH in International Health Services, Cindy has made significant contributions to the healthcare interpreting field in the areas of training, program development, policy formulation, advocacy, and organizational outreach. Her written works are key resources for interpreters, providers, and administrators alike. Cindy was the principal author of the original Bridging the Gap, and her most recent book, Healthcare Interpreting in Small Bites, is being used as an ancillary text at many basic training programs.

  

  Certificates of Attendance will be awarded to all who arrive on time and stay for the entire workshop. Please allow yourself enough time to log on and sign in before the webshop begins. While latecomers are welcome to stay for the educational value of the webshop, DSHS will not provide CE credit if you arrive late, for any reason. Certificate will be emailed the following week.

  Who is teaching?
   
  Marisa Rueda Will graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Luther College in 2006. She has been a medical interpreter at a major U.S. medical center for over 15 years. She became a Certified Healthcare Interpreter-Spanish in 2012 and a Licensed Interpreter Trainer through Cross Cultural Communications in 2017. In 2020, she became a Simulation Center Instructor. She is also a member of the NCIHC Webinars Work Group. In 2022, she was invited to present at the CHIA and ATA Conferences. Marisa specializes in education through storytelling. She has a special interest in providing education about interpreting for OB, mental health, and end of life encounters.

  Interpreting for Postpartum Care

  Obstetric care does not end after a baby is delivered. Interpreters are often called to interpret for new mothers in the postpartum unit to discuss lactation, feeding, newborn screening, newborn cares, and postpartum care. This education is comprehensive and may take hours. Like any specialty area, postpartum teaching has its own terminology. Additionally, you will hear about how this care is different for women who have experienced a pregnancy loss.  

  During this session, you will discover the current methods and terminology utilized when interpreting for patients who have recently given birth. You will also hear about how these methods have changed over the last ten years and what this means for the goals of the encounter.  

  In true Tica Interpreter Education fashion, you will also hear stories about women who willingly share their postpartum journeys. These stories will help you understand how each new mother faces their own joys and struggles. Postpartum care varies depending on the patient and their needs. These stories will give you concrete examples to make the information shared poignant and memorable. After attending this session, you will be prepared to work with a variety of postpartum patients.
    

  

  • Identify common postpartum cares and become familiar with terminology when interpreting for these encounters.  

  • Learn about postpartum care to nontraditional pregnancy journeys, including pregnancy loss and/or labor and delivery complications.  

  • Recognize how education regarding newborn screening and lactation have changed over the last decade.  

  • Reflect on and/or discuss your experience interpreting for postpartum encounters with other medical interpreters.  

  • Acknowledge how your role as a professional interpreter increases positive patient outcomes by providing clear communication between the patient and provider.
