NOTIS’s Community Interpreters Division (CID) presents:

    Interpreting for Prenatal Genetics
    Presented by Cindy Roat

    What is it about?

As one of the fastest changing fields in medicine, genetics a topic that is coming up more often in more healthcare settings. But highly technical vocabulary and complex medical concepts can present real challenges to interpreters who are not familiar with the concepts and vocabulary related to genetics.

This 7-hour interactive online workshop (limited to 30 participants) is a special opportunity for interpreters to learn to work in the fast-changing field of prenatal genetics, using a curriculum developed in collaboration with the National Coordinating Center for the Regional Genetics Networks. This workshop introduces basic concepts in genetics and addresses the role of the genetic counselor, red flags that lead to a referral to prenatal genetics, common prenatal genetic tests, and the most common genetic issues that arise in pregnancy. Technical vocabulary is introduced and exercises help the interpreter learn the vocabulary both in English and a non-English language. Finally, interpreting exercises based on real-life prenatal interviews create opportunities for practice. Language-specific glossaries and practice exercises are provided in Spanish, Cantonese, Vietnamese and Arabic.

    Learning objectives
At the end of this class, participants will be able to:

    1. Explain the relationship between DNA, chromosomes and genes
    2. Accurately describe at least three common prenatal genetic tests and what they are looking for.
    3. Explain how they would handle any of several difficult situations that arise when interpreting in prenatal genetics, and why they would choose that path.

      Book Discussion:
      the philosophy OF TRANSLATION
      by DAMION SEARLS

      Time & Location

      October 16, 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM
      Folio: The Seattle Athenaeum
93 Pike St #307, Seattle, WA 98101, USA

      About the Event

Folio: The Seattle Athenaeum and The Northwest Literary Translators invite you to join us for an in-person book discussion of the 2024 book The Philosophy of Translation by translator Damion Searls, led by Folio librarian Lillian Dabney.

As the translator of sixty books from multiple languages, Searls has spent decades grappling with words on the most granular level: nouns and verbs, accents on people’s names, rhymes, rhythm, “untranslatable” cultural nuances. Here, he connects a wealth of specific examples to larger philosophical issues of reading and perception. This sharp and inviting exploration of the theory and practice of translation is for anyone who has ever marveled at the beauty, force, and movement of language.   Publisher's Website

Read the book (buy or borrow), then join us at Folio for an in-person guided discussion. Please bring a snack or beverage to share if you can.

“Searls’s philosophy is ultimately one of freedom—to move beyond mere equivalence, to translate how a text communicates rather than simply what it says.” - Max Norman (The New Yorker)

“Damion Searls is perhaps the only translator in the world who could write a book with the title The Philosophy of Translation and be taken seriously by theorists and practitioners of translation alike. This erudite and accessible volume takes us on a tour of the world of translation where the familiar is made unfamiliar and back again. A stellar work I will be quoting from and returning to for years to come.” — Anton Hur

NOTIS’s Community Interpreters Division (CID) presents:

Interpreting Between the Lines: Making Sense of Idioms, Jokes and Jargon
      Presented by Yuliya Speroff

      Workshop Overview
Healthcare interpreters invest a significant amount of time in learning medical terminology and the ins and outs of the US healthcare system — and rightly so. However, interpreting encounters in healthcare settings are not all dense medical jargon — they involve real people speaking real language, which may include small talk, stories, jokes, idioms, and cultural references. It might seem that interpreting idioms is less important than getting the medical facts right, but idioms may contain key messages such as descriptions of a patient's progress or lack of it and speakers’ attitude to the situation.

This 3-hour interactive class will equip participants with strategies for dealing with idioms and cultural references and allow participants to develop the newly acquired skills through group practice activities. At the end of the class, the participants will be provided with a list of suggested resources for further practice and study of idioms.

Materials include a PowerPoint presentation, a worksheet with practice exercises, and suggested resources for further study of idioms.

This class includes interactive activities and discussions.

      Learning Objectives:

      1. For participants to become familiar with the concept of idioms and cultural references and to understand the need for developing strategies for dealing with such linguistic phenomena

      2. For participants to develop appropriate strategies for interpreting idioms and cultural references

      3. For participants to engage in meaningful practice that would allow them to develop the newly acquired skills

NOTIS’s Community Interpreters Division (CID) presents:

        STRESS and Interpreting
        Presented by Eliana Lobo

        What is this training about?
Attendees will learn how stress negatively impacts performance, and what they can do about it. This training explains how the physiological effects of stress impact and impede language production and conversion, while providing tools and techniques to help manage stress and improve performance.

Training strategies, techniques for self-calming and study plans for interpreters will be shared with the goal of better preparing working interpreters to be better at handling stress in the moment of interpreting.

        Content includes
techniques to improve and manage memory, breathing exercises to reduce stress and improve message delivery. Methods for establishing baseline metrics (how fast is too fast, how long is too long) will be shared; and exercises for measuring one’s progress, as well as establishing stretch goals for memory and speed will be demonstrated and shared.

Sample scripts for managing flow before the discussion or conversation goes off track will be given. Participants will be encouraged to personalize scripted templates for us in the pre-session and when asking for a repetition or clarification. Skill drills that simulate added stress will be shared. These simulations help prepare interpreters to work while experiencing stress, in that they can learn to develop the additional mechanical skills together with the ability to work through their stress, and ultimately do a better job, while on the job.

        NOTIS’s Community Interpreters Division presents:

        Ethics Jeopardy! 2.0
        Presented by Cindy Roat

        What’s it about?
Ethics has never been so much fun! This two-hour class uses the format of the game show “Jeopardy!” to meet your one-credit ethics requirement for DSHS as well as to get you thinking about how the DSHS Code of Conduct applies to real-life situations. Join veteran interpreter trainer Cindy Roat for a fun and ethical workshop!

        Learning objectives:

At the conclusion of this class, participants will be able to:

        • Name the 12 canons of the DSHS Code of Conduct
        • Identify which canon applies to a given circumstance in healthcare or social service interpreting.

        • Use the principles of the canons to the given circumstances to describe an appropriate response in the given circumstances.

        Handout12-WAC 388-03-050 DSHS Code of Conduct 2021.pdf

This class is a redesign of the very popular Ethics Jeopardy! class approved by LTC in 2023. As so many interpreters have asked to retake the class for their annual ethics credit, the class has been redesigned, using the same Jeopardy template but changing the questions and answers.

This short class will still begin with a quick review of the canons of the DSHS Code of Conduct. Then, as in the previous version, the participants will be split into two teams to play a game using the Jeopardy format to challenge their memory of the canons and their ability to apply the canons to specific interpreting challenges. The questions, however, will be different, as will the specific interpreting challenges presented.

This workshop will not be recorded.
To earn credit, live attendance is required.
