  Vaccines are the newest hot topic across the world. If you have worked in pediatric medicine though, you are already very familiar with them. But do we really know everything we’d like to about pediatric vaccines and the diseases that they prevent? If you’re curious about the science behind different types of vaccines or the systemic damage one tiny pathogen can cause, then this is the workshop for you. We will dive deep into the diseases targeted by the CDC’s pediatric vaccination schedule and the vaccines that are making them history.

  • Understand the different types of vaccines currently recommended for children in the US and the science behind their development

   Who is teaching?
  Sara Greenlee, MA, CT is a medical translator and interpreter who works both in-house and as a freelancer. She is an ATA certified translator (Spanish > English) and a CCHI certified interpreter (CHI™-Spanish). She also holds a master’s degree in Translation and Interpretation from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (MIIS).   Interpreting for Infant & Pregnancy Loss

  What is it about?
  Pregnancy is often associated with new life. However, not all pregnancies result in the birth of a healthy child. Obstetric care accounts for a large volume of medical encounters requiring an interpreter. While routine obstetric visits may be predictable and short, medical interpreters need to be prepared to interpret for LEP patients who experience pregnancy complications and loss.

  During this session, you will learn about common causes, terminology, and standard care for infant and pregnancy loss. Additionally, you will hear stories about women who have first-hand experiences with this tragic loss of life. Their stories will provide insight on the emotional, physical, and psychological toll of experiencing this type of loss.

  Coming away from this session you will not only be more intellectually prepared, but also better equipped mentally and emotionally to interpret for patients in these encounters. You will also learn why professional interpreting services can significantly improve outcomes for LEP patients and family members in such situations.

  1. Identify common causes of pregnancy loss and treatment in the early, middle, and late stages of pregnancy. 
  2. Learn about standard care for patients who experience pregnancy loss during the first, second, and third trimesters.

  4. Understand the role of good communication in reducing the risk of emotional and psychological pathologies after pregnancy loss.

  Who is teaching? 
  Marisa Rueda Will graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Luther College in 2006. She has been a medical interpreter at a major U.S. medical center for over 15 years. She became a Certified Healthcare Interpreter-Spanish in 2012 and a Licensed Interpreter Trainer through Cross Cultural Communications in 2017. In 2020, she became a Simulation Center Instructor. She is also a member of the NCIHC Webinars Work Group. In 2022, she was invited to present at the CHIA and ATA Conferences. Marisa specializes in education through storytelling. She has a special interest in providing education about interpreting for OB, mental health, and end of life encounters.

  A Seat at the Table: Everything you ever wanted to know about tube feeding

  This is a recorded workshop formatted into an on-demand workshop. 

  
  

  What is it about? 

  Tube feeding is an intervention used in almost every area of medicine: neonatology, pediatrics, geriatrics, obstetrics, surgery, behavioral health, and many more. Come learn from an Advanced Nutritional Support Dietician which patients are candidates for feeding tubes and why. In this webshop, we will cover the types of tubes that can be offered, what goes in them, and how patients and caregivers are taught to care for them. Live exercises will work on interpretation skills and vocabulary building so that you will never have to ask what a “tubbie” is or how decanting works. Our expert will walk you through every step and have you feeling like a pro in no time! 
  
  Goals of the webshop
  

  • Become familiar with the different types of feeding tubes, the process of placing each type of feeding tube, the basics of feeding tube care, common formulas/formula types, and expected follow up
  • Recognize vocabulary and concepts related to feeding tubes and situate them in context
  • Improve interpretation-related skills that will be used in encounters involving feeding tubes
  • Build a glossary to help prepare for sessions or translations involving feeding tubes

  Megan Greenlee RD, CDN joined the URMC Golisano Children’s Hospital medical team in 2019 and she is a part of the department of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Nutrition and Hepatology. She started her career at one end of the nutrition spectrum as a pastry chef and graduated with an Associate’s of Applied Science from Paul Smith’s College. She then transferred to the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) as she became fascinated with the science behind food. She graduated from RIT with a Bachelor’s of Science in Nutrition Management and completed her dietetic internship at the West Virginia University Medical Center at Ruby Memorial Hospital in 2016. She then returned to Rochester, NY and worked as a long term care and neurobehavioral dietitian as well as a pediatric outpatient dietitian for Rochester Regional Health. After 3 years with RRH, she jumped at the opportunity to join the Pediatric Advanced Nutrition Support clinic at Golisano Children’s Hospital and have fallen in love with pediatric medicine.

  Interpreting for Well Visits

  Are you new to healthcare interpreting?
  Are you a conference, social services or court interpreter who is interested in taking healthcare assignments?

  If so, this is the workshop for you!

  
  

   This webshop is a two-hour workshop, covering interpreting for check-ups and well visits in the following areas of specialization: Adult Medicine and Pediatrics, often referred to as Family Medicine, and the Dental Clinic.  Topics one can expect to cover in each clinic; how to prepare in advance (terminology and concepts related to development, metrics and measurements); proper protocols before, during and after the examination will be reviewed. Resources, recommendations and best practices for interpreting in these settings will be shared. 

  Standards of Practice related to sight translation and assisting patients with forms will be looked at carefully. You will learn about a tool for quickly assessing sight translation requests (that is, weeding out requests that are appropriate from those that are not, along with practical suggestions for handling these requests. Best practice recommendations for navigating privacy issues when assisting patients with paperwork will be shared, as well as how to handle the entering of personal information on forms. The importance of the Pre-Session will be reviewed.

  Most of this presentation is devoted into delving into what distinguishes annual check-ups for both men vs women, adult vs an infant or child, and for dental appointments. What one can expect will take place during these types of well visits will be explained. With the changes brought about by the implementation of Section 1557, more and more dental practices are scheduling interpreters for their patients. A review of practices for preventative (annual check-ups) and corrective (orthodontia) dental care will be reviewed.
  
  This session also covers best practice for assisting patients with intake and return visit paperwork, and NCIHC recommendations for what qualifies for sight translation, and what types of documents need to be professionally translated.
  There will be practice delivering a brief, yet complete pre-session, and how to ask for repetitions and clarifications in a professional manner. Methods (formulas) and phone apps for converting from imperial to metric measures will be shared. Mathematical concepts such as median, mean, average, percentage and percentile, will be discussed in order to help attendees grasp the concepts clearly, so as to find equivalents for their language pair.
  Free links to reputable resources for glossaries, terminology, patient education material and standards of practice will be provided.

  What You Need to Succeed as a Video Remote Interpreter

  This workshop looks at best practices for remote interpreting from home. Increasingly, during the pandemic, many onsite interpreters have made this shift as independent contractors. Telehealth is booming, and despite the easy commute when one works from home, assignments have gotten tougher, as remote interpreting requests have grown in scope and increasingly are scheduled for complex encounters, during this pandemic.
  
  Guidelines for choosing equipment, workstation set-up and connectivity requirements, observing HIPAA, and managing clients during the session are shared. We’ll look at how to:  enhance one’s remote persona, and utilize scripts to enforce best practice (pre-session, confidentiality, transparency and managing the flow). Local and Federal law governing call center employment practices will be examined. Links will be shared for materials and exercises to assist interpreters with skills assessment and enhancement.

  1) Understand how to triage requests to the appropriate modality
  2) Know how to configure your home or call center workstation for best user experience
  3) Understand the importance of continually self-assessing one’s interpreting skills; knowing where to find training materials to develop and improve that skillset

Throughout the course, we will provide practical guidance on how to approach these various aspects of court interpreting, and will highlight key considerations and best practices for interpreters working in this context. By the end of the course, participants will have a deeper understanding of the court interpreting process, and will be better equipped to provide high-quality interpretation services in this setting.

  Who is teaching? Raymond Ejarque has practiced law since his admission to the Washington State Bar in June of 1994. He started his career in public interest law helping migrant farm workers and indigents in Texas and Washington State.  Later he worked in Criminal defense as a public defender in Seattle for many years. As a Public Defender Mr. Ejarque gained invaluable trial and courtroom experience. He learned early how to take tough cases to a jury and how to form persuasive arguments to convince judges and juries to look at his clients story in a new light. From reading out loud to changing the color of the font, we all have strategies and tricks for forcing ourselves to see (and hear!) our text in a new light. But are there specific areas or types of text that present extra pitfalls when editing? Is there a perfect time of day for dealing with revisions? How many drafts is too many? Come to hear your colleagues' collected wisdom and share your best tips with us.

  This event will be organized into two parts. Part 1 will be brief presentations by members who have a specific set of techniques to share or demonstrate. Part 2 will be devoted to discussion and brainstorming.

  Get familiar with the who, what, where, and why of a psychosocial evaluation from the context of nursing, social work, criminal and immigration law. Learn about the ways a psychosocial evaluation is different from mental health therapy. We will also cover the unique features of this type of evaluation so that the interpreter can anticipate the format and flow, ranging from syntax to emotionally charged content. Find out what skills you need for this type of interpretation and what you can do to improve those skills.  We will also practice with a mock script!

  Robin Ragan is a professor of Spanish at Knox College in Illinois, teaching in a translation and interpreter training program designed by her. She earned her CMI-Spanish since 2016, and is a Illinois state court interpreter as well. In 2020 she earned the Global Engagement Initiative Award from the American Council on Teachers of Foreign Languages Global for her translation and interpreting program at Knox, and a Humanities Innovation Grant from the Modern Languages Association to support new coursework on “Interpreting for Crisis Contexts in Immigration”. Robin is also a collaborator with Americans Against Language Barriers where she trains future medical interpreters and frequently teaches units on Modes, Roles, Ethics and Vicarious Trauma. She interprets for psychosocial evaluations on a weekly basis through her work with immigrant populations and asylum seekers.

  What is it about? The Bible is a seminal text in the Christian culture, whose language, concepts, and imagery are inextricably woven into the fabric of many modern languages, including English and Russian. Biblical quotes and allusions are frequent in a wide variety of non-religious texts ranging from fiction to journalism and political speeches. What makes this situation more challenging for translators and interpreters is that biblical references may work differently in different languages, and rendering one with its direct biblical counterpart in the target language is not always the best strategy. The speaker will talk about some of the most prominent biblical quotations in English and discuss related translation asymmetries and strategies in English-Russian translation and interpretation. Presented in English.

  Please join us to review general criminal procedure for the Superior Courts and for the Courts of Limited Jurisdiction in the State of Washington. Discussion will emphasize the scope, purpose, and construction of Arraignments, Pre-Trial Conferences, Omnibus Hearings, Motions Hearings, Bench and Jury Trials, and Sentencings. The topics will focus on basic understanding for Interpreters and how they may improve their role as an important part of the judicial process.

  In addition, this webinar will discuss the general background of Motions practice in the Criminal Justice system and how pre-trial Motions do affect how a case is presented to the Court and a Jury. Emphasis will be placed on typical Motions raised during a Criminal Trial such as the 3.5 Motion to Suppress Statements made by a defendant and 3.6 Motion to Suppress physical evidence raised in a criminal proceeding.

  Interpreting for Postpartum Care

  Obstetric care does not end after a baby is delivered. Interpreters are often called to interpret for new mothers in the postpartum unit to discuss lactation, feeding, newborn screening, newborn cares, and postpartum care. This education is comprehensive and may take hours. Like any specialty area, postpartum teaching has its own terminology. Additionally, you will hear about how this care is different for women who have experienced a pregnancy loss.  

  During this session, you will discover the current methods and terminology utilized when interpreting for patients who have recently given birth. You will also hear about how these methods have changed over the last ten years and what this means for the goals of the encounter.  

  In true Tica Interpreter Education fashion, you will also hear stories about women who willingly share their postpartum journeys. These stories will help you understand how each new mother faces their own joys and struggles. Postpartum care varies depending on the patient and their needs. These stories will give you concrete examples to make the information shared poignant and memorable. After attending this session, you will be prepared to work with a variety of postpartum patients.
    

  

  • Identify common postpartum cares and become familiar with terminology when interpreting for these encounters.  

  • Learn about postpartum care to nontraditional pregnancy journeys, including pregnancy loss and/or labor and delivery complications.  

  • Recognize how education regarding newborn screening and lactation have changed over the last decade.  

  • Reflect on and/or discuss your experience interpreting for postpartum encounters with other medical interpreters.  

  • Acknowledge how your role as a professional interpreter increases positive patient outcomes by providing clear communication between the patient and provider.

  Marisa Rueda Will graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Luther College in 2006. She has been a medical interpreter at a major U.S. medical center for over 15 years. She became a Certified Healthcare Interpreter-Spanish in 2012 and a Licensed Interpreter Trainer through Cross Cultural Communications in 2017. In 2020, she became a Simulation Center Instructor. She is also a member of the NCIHC Webinars Work Group. In 2022, she was invited to present at the CHIA and ATA Conferences. Marisa specializes in education through storytelling. She has a special interest in providing education about interpreting for OB, mental health, and end of life encounters.

  As part of his visit to Seattle, acclaimed literary translator Anton Hur will be at Seattle Central College to give an undergraduate workshop to students registered for Takami Nieda’s ENGL210: Translation for Global Competence. Students will participate in a generative critique of translations-in-progress by participants of the masterclass. Translation is often perceived as a solitary task, but this workshop will demonstrate the benefits of collaborating in a supportive community and asking questions such as, “What was being attempted here? and “How can we help the translator to capture that better?” Participants will have the opportunity to submit their own samples of up to 300 words of prose or two short poems, and select samples will be chosen for generative critique during the workshop.

  • Behaviors and verbal patterns that may be present in people on the spectrum.
  • Specialized terminology in autism services commonly used in medical and educational settings.
  • Practice with vocabulary and conversion.
  • Special challenges for the interpreter.

With an MPH in International Health Services, Cindy has made significant contributions to the healthcare interpreting field in the areas of training, program development, policy formulation, advocacy, and organizational outreach.   Who is teaching?
  Yuliya Speroff is a Russian-English CoreCHI™ and DSHS-certified healthcare interpreter. Yuliya first started interpreting over 10 years ago in her hometown of Novosibirsk, Russia and has since interpreted in a variety of settings – from a fighter jet factory to a live brain surgery, and most recently at a number of hospitals in Seattle. Yuliya also holds an MA in Business Management and is certified as both an English and a Russian language instructor with more than 10 years of teaching experience. Yuliya’s The Medical Interpreter Blog focuses on providing medical interpreters with resources and information for continuous professional development.

  WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: 
  Interpreting in Mental Health: In the United States, over 51 million adults experience mental health disorders, emphasizing the critical role interpreters play in facilitating effective communication in mental health settings.
  
  Throughout this workshop, participants will gain insights into several key areas:
  
  

  • Understanding where mental health services are provided and who delivers them, ensuring interpreters are familiar with the landscape of mental health care. - Learning about common mental health disorders, common diagnostic tools and treatment options for mental health disorders, equipping interpreters with terminology and concepts necessary for accurate interpretation.
  • Identifying various encounters interpreters may face in mental health settings, from therapy sessions to psychiatric evaluations, to ensure preparedness for diverse scenarios.
  • Recognizing and addressing the unique challenges interpreters may encounter in mental health settings, such as managing emotional dynamics and navigating sensitive conversations, and interpreting when standardized tests are administered.
  • Understanding how interpreting in mental health settings differs from other contexts, and how this may affect the interpreter’s performance and practice.

  Interpreting for Spiritual Care: Spiritual Care plays a unique yet essential role in caring for patients, whether the patient practices a particular religion or needs an additional layer of support in the face of a life-changing health event. Even the most experienced interpreters may feel uncertain when interpreting for spiritual care encounters - concerns can range from not being familiar with sacred texts to being able to do a good job when you don't share the patients' beliefs. This presentation will introduce the participants to the work of spiritual care providers, outline specific challenges that interpreters may face when interpreting during spiritual care encounters and discuss strategies for overcoming them.

  Managing the Interpreting Encounter: In order for interpreters to interpret accurately and completely to the best of their ability, they have to create appropriate conditions for the interpreting encounter and navigate issues that may prevent them from doing so. To this end, this class will help interpreters develop their own pre-session, consider positioning choices during the encounter and learn interventions to ensure successful interpretation such as intervening to manage the flow of communication (e.g. ask the parties to pause, speak up, speak one at a time, to repeat what they said) and interventions to manage the triadic relationship (e.g. asking the parties to address each other directly, redirecting side conversations).
  
  Participants will be given time to develop and practice their own pre-sessions. In addition, students will work together to develop scripts for commonly occurring challenging situations/ After completing the class, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the purpose of a pre-session, its main components and develop their own.

  2. Explain advantages and disadvantages of different positioning choices during an encounter.

  3. Develop techniques for interventions to manage the flow of communication and encourage direct communication between parties.

  4. Develop strategies and scripts for dealing with challenging situations

  Palliative care seeks to optimize quality of life and relieve physical and emotional suffering through pain management, comfort care, and spiritual support. A 2010 survey of patients receiving palliative care in California found that 40% spoke limited English. Since palliative care depends on regular, clear communication between patients, providers, and families, interpreters are key members of any palliative care team.

  For interpreters, conversations involving palliative care, especially those at the end of life, can be among the most difficult to convey — not only linguistically and culturally, but personally.                                    

  This interactive seven-hour workshop is designed to prepare experienced medical interpreters to work in palliative care settings. It includes:

  • An Introduction to Palliative Care
  • Interpreting Skills Applied to Palliative Care
  • The Vocabulary of Palliative Care
  • Sight Translation in Palliative Care
  • The Impact of Emotion and Belief on Interpreting

  
  This multimedia, interactive training includes videos, PowerPoint presentations, and practice of interpreting and sight translation. Bilingual medical glossaries and practice activities are provided in Cantonese/traditional Chinese, Mandarin/simplified Chinese, Korean, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog, and Vietnamese.

  This four-hour training provides interpreters with an overview of pharmacy practice. Facilitated by a WA State licensed pharmacists and a certified medical interpreter, this webshop will teach participants about:

  • Pharmacy Training, education, areas of practice, and specializations

  • Basic pharmacology: drug types, classifications, prescribing, and therapy

  • Drug costs and insurance coverage

  • Pharmaceutical safety

  • Pharmacist-patient interactions

  Jim Ramsey has over 30 years of experience as a licensed pharmacist in Washington State. Since receiving his degree from the University of Washington, he has worked as a front-line pharmacist and pharmacy manager for Group Health, CHI Franciscan, and Kaiser Permanente. Jim is skilled in disease management, Medicaid coverage, pharmacy benefit management, pharmacy automation, and healthcare management.  

   

  Yvonne Simpson is Senior Director of Language access and Cultural Advocacy at UW Medicine in Seattle. She holds a Master of Arts in Spanish (Linguistics) and has significant experience in interpreting, translating, and training. Yvonne is a WA DSHS Certified Spanish Medical Interpreter and is a Certified Medical Interpreter through the National Board. She has worked as a medical interpreter in Arizona and Washington, working with patients in hospital and clinic settings, in both remote and in-person modalities.

  Interpreting Special Diets
  Presented by Sara Greenlee and Megan Greenlee

   
  This workshop walks interpreters through explanations and examples of teachings for the most common specialized diets that patients are put on. Our Registered Dietitian, Megan Greenlee, will review the ketogenic diet, elimination diets for FPIES and EOE, gluten- and dairy-free diets, and more, giving detailed examples of patient education for each one. Participants will have the opportunity to practice specific interpreting skills, like retention and accuracy, that will be needed to interpret dietary teachings in the course of their work. They will have ample opportunity to ask questions of our subject matter expert throughout the presentation.

  Goals of the webshop

  • Become familiar with the most common types of special diets and the conditions they are used to treat
  • Be exposed to vocabulary and phrases used to teach patients about special diets
  • Build a glossary of foods that are mentioned during diet teachings

  • Improve interpretation-related skills that will be needed in encounters with 

    patients following special diets

  Megan Greenlee Mapes is a Registered Dietitian, Certified Dietitian Nutritionist and Certified Specialist in Pediatrics. Megan became a dietitian after earning her first degree in baking and pastry art and becoming fascinated by the science behind food. That experience paired with a desire for a career that would allow her to help others made clinical nutrition and dietetics the obvious choice. She graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology in 2015 and moved to West Virginia to complete her dietetic internship at Ruby Memorial Hospital of West Virginia University. After passing her RD exam in 2016, Megan went into clinical care and eventually made her way to pediatrics. In 2021 Megan passed her Certified Specialist in Pediatrics exam. Megan comes from the world of pediatric gastroenterology with ample experience in failure to thrive, infant feeding concerns, formula and breast milk fortification, nutrition support (all tube feeding types and TPN), picky eaters, constipation, IBS, IBD and healthy lifestyle. While Megan loves the pediatric population, she also sees adult patients and enjoys empowering patients to focus on their health and not their weight and finding ways to incorporate all foods into a healthy lifestyle.

  Sara Greenlee, CT, CHI™-Spanish is a medical translator and interpreter who works both in-house and as a freelancer. She is ATA (ES>EN) and CCHI certified. Currently, Sara serves as assistant administrator to the ATA Medical Division. She holds a master’s degree in Translation and Interpretation from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (MIIS). Her career in medical interpretation began at Stanford Children’s Hospital in California and she currently works at Children’s Hospital of Orange County in Southern California. Sara gives trainings for interpreters and continues to share her knowledge within the profession whenever she can.

  Interpreting for Forensic Evaluations

  Course Description:

  Forensic evaluations are used in many contexts including healthcare settings, legal criminal proceedings, and immigration hearings. A successful forensic evaluation often requires the interviewee to detail uncomfortable and upsetting information about their lives. In this workshop, participants will learn from a physician and a certified medical interpreter about the format, flow, and questions contained in a typical forensic evaluation, as well as best practices for conducting the interview via an interpreter. We will discuss pre-session preparation, tips for establishing rapport, and strategies for working with clients using a trauma-informed approach. The workshop will involve didactic teaching with extensive participant interaction and discussion in addition to a one-hour practice period in which attendees will work on three realistic scenarios the trainers have identified as particularly difficult. Finally, we will conclude with a discussion of additional training resources and ways to get involved in forensic evaluations moving forward.

  Who is teaching? 
  
  Robin Ragan is a professor of Spanish at Knox College in Illinois, teaching in a translation and interpreter training program designed by her. She earned her CMI-Spanish since 2016, and is a Illinois state court interpreter as well. In 2020 she earned the Global Engagement Initiative Award from the American Council on Teachers of Foreign Languages Global for her translation and interpreting program at Knox, and a Humanities Innovation Grant from the Modern Languages Association to support new coursework on “Interpreting for Crisis Contexts in Immigration”. Robin is also a collaborator with Americans Against Language Barriers where she trains future medical interpreters and frequently teaches units on Modes, Roles, Ethics and Vicarious Trauma. She interprets for psychosocial evaluations on a weekly basis through her work with immigrant populations and asylum seekers.

  Jordan Greenbaum, MD is the former medical director of the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children, and past medical director of the Stephanie Blank Center for Safe and Healthy Children at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. She is a retired child abuse physician living in Atlanta, GA. Dr. Greenbaum is a board member of the International Society on the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN) and a past president of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children. She has provided training and technical assistance to international school staff, health and mental health professionals, as well as social workers, law enforcement officers and prosecutors globally to improve the community response to child abuse, exploitation, and trafficking. She provides training and technical assistance regarding the trauma-informed, rights-based approach to interacting with children and families who have experienced trauma related to sexual, physical or community violence, and forced migration. Dr. Greenbaum assisted in the creation of the material for this training and is a co-trainer.

   Many, if not most, of the ethical mistakes made by interpreters tends to come from a place of trying to be helpful, polite, or supportive. But the unintended consequence may be an ethical violation. Understanding role boundaries clearly, can help interpreters navigate the waters of customer service in a way that consistently upholds the Code of Ethics. 
  
  This webshop will explore all of the above. Scripts will be shared for positive, professional interaction, and breakout room sessions will offer the opportunity for attendees to practice.

  Attendees will be able to describe:

  • What a code of ethics is
  • Why a code of ethics exists for every health profession?
  • What the interpreter code of ethics covers

  Handouts: We will have a Venn diagram activity for attendees to compare the codes of ethics and then report back ethics held in common. Please print them prior to the workshop or have them ready in another device.

  Scholarly texts occupy an ambiguous space between the literary and the technical. Their translation demands keen research skills to track down obscure quotations, detailed work on footnotes and bibliographies, terminological consistency, subject-matter expertise, and a specialized vocabulary. Yet the prose of these texts frequently demands the rich cultural and intellectual background and writerly talents that only a literary translator can provide. Scholarly translators also dwell in a different publishing environment with its own challenges and opportunities.

  Join us for this presentation by a professional translator who works on both technical and literary texts to discuss the special challenges and working conditions of this translation sub-species and define its taxonomy: platypus or unicorn?

  Zakiya Hanafi (PhD, Stanford) is an independent scholar and professional translator of French and Italian into English, specializing in academic works on literature, history, and philosophy. In 2023 she was awarded the prestigious MLA Scaglione Prize for a Translation of a Scholarly Study of Literature for her work on Guido Mazzoni’s On Modern Poetry (Harvard UP). Her own book, The Monster in the Machine: Magic, Medicine, and the Marvelous in the Time of the Scientific Revolution was published in 2000 by Duke UP. With more than a dozen translated books to her name, she is keen to start a dialogue on the space of the scholarly translator and its place among the greater translation community.

  Course Description
   
  Vicarious trauma is a hazard of the job for healthcare workers and community service providers. Medical interpreters are not immune to this risk. However, unlike other healthcare and community service providers, interpreters often do not have a built-in support network they can turn to when they are suffering the effects of work-induced vicarious trauma.

  Throughout this three-hour workshop, interpreters will learn how vicarious trauma may have affected them. They will also learn how to recognize their default physical and emotional responses to trauma. By recognizing their default trauma responses, interpreters can begin to understand how their bodies and minds are affected by traumatic events.

  Furthermore, interpreters will learn how vicarious trauma can lead to positive and productive growth in the future. Interpreters will be able to understand which behaviors and actions are more likely to lead to healing and resilience. Likewise, they will be able to identify which coping behaviors are more likely to lead to addictive and harmful patterns in the long term.

  Learning Objectives

  1. Identify common initial and delayed responses to trauma and vicarious trauma.
  2. Recognize symptoms associated with vicarious trauma.
  3. Distinguish between healthy and unhealthy coping strategies.
  4. Understand which behaviors and thoughts are more likely to lead to post-traumatic growth.
  5. Share traumatic experiences with interpreting colleagues in a safe space.

  Who is teaching?
   
  Marisa Rueda Will graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Luther College in 2006. She has been a medical interpreter at a major U.S. medical center for over 15 years. She became a Certified Healthcare Interpreter-Spanish in 2012 and a Licensed Interpreter Trainer through Cross Cultural Communications in 2017. In 2020, she became a Simulation Center Instructor. She is also a member of the NCIHC Webinars Work Group. In 2022, she was invited to present at the CHIA and ATA Conferences. Marisa specializes in education through storytelling. She has a special interest in providing education about interpreting for OB, mental health, and end of life encounters.
