The Fine Arts Work Center and the American Literary Translators Association present

Human Translators in the Age of AI

an online panel discussion

Everyone is talking about it: Is AI the future of literary translation? When it comes to translating literature from one language to another, is AI another tool in the translator’s toolbelt—or are we facing a future in which international literature is delivered to us through “AI voice,” rather than human artistry? As some publishers announce plans to transition to AI-powered translation, hiring literary translators only to “post-edit” machine-drafted texts at much lower rates, this panel will discuss the value of human translators. Join us for an event in collaboration with the American Literary Translators Association (ALTA), in which we will shed light on the art of human literary translation.

This event is free and will be moderated by Chenxin Jiang. Panelists include: Shelley Fairweather-VegaIan GilesUmair Kazi, and Kristen Renee Miller.

About the Instructor/Moderator

The American Literary Translators Association (ALTA) is the only organization in the United States devoted exclusively to literary translators. ALTA’s mission is to support their work, advance the art of literary translation, and connect students, teachers, publishers, and readers of literature in translation. This mission is realized through its work as a nonprofit arts membership association that provides programs and professional affiliation to the literary translation community. The annual ALTA conference and year-round events are structured around the creation of high-quality art. ALTA also administers awards to recognize excellence in translation and provides fellowships and mentorships to support emerging translators.
