International Visitor Leadership Program Information Session

What is it about?
The International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) is the U.S. Department of State's premier professional exchange program. Into this frame, the State Department recruits interpreters to facilitate communication for the international participants when they are traveling in the US.
This presentation will explain the IVLP program, the interpreter’s role, and the entire recruitment process including the tests. Interpreters for IVLP are freelance contractors.
This presentation is free as it is sponsored by the State Department.
Who can apply?
- An American citizen or a permanent resident (green card holder)
- You have one foreign language and English
- You are available to travel for this freelance role for up to 3 weeks within the US
- Education requirements are not stated but education level is taken into consideration
- All languages are needed but currently there is a demand for: South-east Asian, central Asian, Indian subcontinent, and Scandinavian languages. Mandarin, Spanish, Arabic, and Russian are also in demand.
- Those who pass the pre-screening assessment, will have to travel to DC for the interpreting exams on their own expenses
This is an informative workshop/presentation and those who will participate will have to fill out a feedback form and should have a strong interest in applying for this role within the next 6-9 months.

Presenter: Thei Zervaki is a world-traveled seasoned linguist based in Seattle. She worked in private, corporate and government agencies as a linguist, language consultant, translator, interpreter, and translation project manager and director for over 20 years. She is currently working as an interpreter for international conferences, US courts and the US State Department in Greek, English, French and Italian. She is also the author of the book Translate your blog and website to expand in international markets. She loves culinary history books, weird words, and dictionaries, and enjoys a glass of chilled Rosé on hot and humid nights.
