THE INTERPRETER’S ACHILLES’ HEEL: RECOGNIZING AND RENDERING FIGURATIVE SPEECH - ONLINE - FALL 2020

Trainer: Cindy Roat, MPH

What’s the hardest thing to interpret in healthcare? Acronyms? Technical terminology? In fact, recently released research suggests that for non-native speaker, idioms are the most difficult speech to interpret accurately. Think about it; first you have to figure out whether the phrase should be taken literally; if not, you have to capture the underlying meaning and figure out how to express that meaning in the target language. All in an instant! And considering that English speakers use an average of three idioms per minute (!) in their everyday speech, knowing how to recognize and accurately render figurative speech becomes a critical skill for an interpreter.

This class is designed to help non-native speakers of English to: (1) first identify when speech is figurative, not literal, and then (2) interpret such speech accurately. When you are done, you will recognize over one hundred new English idioms and be able to interpret them with ease.
