Course description
Although established ethical and professional codes of conduct for legal and medical interpretation have similar standards of responsibility and trust, there exist practical differences in their underlying values.
Interpreters who work across sectors need to make sure they understand the rules and code of ethics for each sector before taking work. Current codes of ethics and practice for medical and legal Interpreting are setting specific and may not fully apply to quasi-legal and quasi-medical settings in which some hybrid of the two standards lives. Some behaviors permitted in one setting are not permitted in others.
Participants will be introduced to a 5-step decision-making model they can use to construct solutions for ethical dilemmas and gain a new understanding of in-situ applications of the codes of ethics applicable to interpreting in healthcare and legal settings.

About the presenter
Maria Ceballos-Wallis is a Georgia/Florida Certified Spanish Interpreter on staff with the DeKalb County State Court, in Decatur, GA. She occupied various key positions on the Board of Directors of the Atlanta Association of Interpreters and Translators beginning in 2011 and worked in multilingual communications since 1990. Her passion has always been eliminating barriers to effective communication through the mastery of language and the media. In addition to being an accomplished television/documentary producer, in 2002, Maria received a certificate in translation studies from Florida International University and was certified as a Spanish/English translator by the National Australian Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI).
