“Aaah, summer! What can possibly compete with the PNW’s best-kept secret: long, warm, sun-filled days, trimmed with blooms tended by neighbors with green thumbs and punctuated with farmers’ markets, music festivals, picnics, hikes, and maybe even a little travel?

I admit that, as I write, we’re still a little closer to “Juneuary” than I quite like — a word I had never heard of a few years ago, and one I never thought would be part of my vocabulary in any language! But I’ve been here long enough now to trust in what’s coming, in what’s passed, and also in what NOTIS has in store for us.

 🥊 ✨ A French Translation Slam ✨ 🥊 

In June, the NW Literary Translators gathered for their ever-popular Annual Translation Slam! 

Here, the competing translators and their esteemed referree strike a playfully pugnacious pose.

This year’s language was French, and the genre was Poetry. 

The contenders (above, left to right) were Elise Krudineier, Zakiya Hanafi, and Arwen Dewey. Second to left stands Rich Watts, a formidable French translator himself. 

A comment from an audience member elicits laughter from the translators. 

“J’erre” plays in the background, a musical interpretation of the evening’s final poem — in three wildly different translations! 

The Northwest Translators & Interpreters Society enthusiastically invites you to their 2024 NOTIS Annual Conference — taking place all day Saturday, September 14, at the Lynnwood Event Center.

We are excited to welcome past ATA President Corinne McKay as our 2024 Keynote Speaker. Drawing from more than 20 years of experience as a FR-EN translator and interpreter, Corinne will speak to recent, accelerated changes in the fields and offer expert advice on how to prepare for (and pass) exams and how to earn more money (six figures?!) as a freelancer.

We Want You To Socialize!

Translation and interpreting can be a solitary profession. NOTIS knows this and wants to helping our members meet and socialize with each other. To keep up with the times, we recently doubled the amount of grant money available for each member-organized meetup. Have you been wishing you could have coffee or happy hour drinks with others in your field? Or maybe even invite people to lunch at your home? 

NOTIS can help you make it happen! Pick a time and a place, and NOTIS will publicize your meetup through email and social media as well as reimburse up to $100.00 of the cost of food and refreshments.

This opportunity is specifically designed to support member gatherings outside of the Seattle area, since members near Seattle have easy access to NOTIS’s other social and professional networking opportunities. To be eligible, the event must be at least 30 miles away from Seattle and have at least 4 NOTIS members attending.

Anton Hur Translation Residency Dazzles & Delights

Jumping from one fictional world to another gives a translator jetlag… You need to crawl out of your skin and stuff yourself into a new one, and that’s hard!

In May 2024, the University of Washington’s Translation Studies Hub hosted the first in a new series of literary translator residencies, a program underwritten by a generous UW benefactor. The first translator-in-residence was renowned Korean-English translator Anton Hur, who presented a lecture, a masterclass, and a workshop while in Seattle. He also attended a more informal reception with time for questions and casual conversation, hosted by the Northwest Literary Translators at Folio.

Across the events, Hur’s remarks focused on voice in translation and how to pitch works we love to publishers, together with metaphorical musings on the act — and art — of translation, some practical advice about making a living, and an all-caps proclamation that we, as translators, actually hold all the cards. NOTIS Distributes Grants for Medical Exam Registration 💸

In February, NOTIS received a generous donation aimed exclusively at supporting medical interpreters who require certification through the NBCMI and CCHI exams. The donor rightly recognized that it is costly for new and continuing interpreters to prepare for and take these exams and wanted to help. NOTIS was more than happy to use our contacts and expertise to distribute the donated funds. By working with local interpretation trainers and other publicity, NOTIS’s new Membership Care & Development Committee has so far distributed seven grants and expects the final three grants to be determined soon...

Abigail Tubbs, a Spanish interpreter in the Tri-Cities area, wrote to say:

“I received the check as a reimbursement for the CCHI core test I took this month and passed!...  [My husband and I] have had to pay everything out of pocket, and having only been married a few months before I entered school it was very tight financially! Thank you for your generous gift, it was the first break we have had!”

This is an example of how NOTIS leverages community resources to support our members. We are thrilled to be able to partner with community donors to play a small role in Abigail’s — and other’s — success!
