Tube feeding is an intervention used in almost every area of medicine: neonatology, pediatrics, geriatrics, obstetrics, surgery, behavioral health, and many more. Come learn from an Advanced Nutritional Support Dietician which patients are candidates for feeding tubes and why. In this webshop, we will cover the types of tubes that can be offered, what goes in them, and how patients and caregivers are taught to care for them. Live exercises will work on interpretation skills and vocabulary building so that you will never have to ask what a “tubbie” is or how decanting works. Our expert will walk you through every step and have you feeling like a pro in no time!

Goals of the webshop:

Become familiar with the different types of feeding tubes, the process of placing each type of feeding tube, the basics of feeding tube care, common formulas/formula types, and expected follow up
Recognize vocabulary and concepts related to feeding tubes and situate them in context

Sara Greenlee, MA, CT is a medical translator and interpreter who works both in-house and as a freelancer. She is an ATA certified translator (Spanish > English) and a CCHI certified interpreter (CHI™-Spanish). She also holds a master’s degree in Translation and Interpretation from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (MIIS). Her career in medical interpretation began at Stanford Children’s Hospital in California and continued at Strong Memorial Hospital and its pediatric counterpart, Golisano Children’s Hospital, in New York. She currently works at Children’s Hospital of Orange County in Southern California.

Megan Greenlee RD, CDN joined the URMC Golisano Children’s Hospital medical team in 2019 and she is a part of the department of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Nutrition and Hepatology. She started her career at one end of the nutrition spectrum as a pastry chef and graduated with an Associate’s of Applied Science from Paul Smith’s College. She then transferred to the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) as she became fascinated with the science behind food. She graduated from RIT with a Bachelor’s of Science in Nutrition Management and completed her dietetic internship at the West Virginia University Medical Center at Ruby Memorial Hospital in 2016. She then returned to Rochester, NY and worked as a long term care and neurobehavioral dietitian as well as a pediatric outpatient dietitian for Rochester Regional Health. After 3 years with RRH, she jumped at the opportunity to join the Pediatric Advanced Nutrition Support clinic at Golisano Children’s Hospital and have fallen in love with pediatric medicine.

Are you new to healthcare interpreting? Are you a conference, social services or court interpreter who is interested in taking healthcare assignments? If so, this is the workshop for you!

This webshop is a two-hour workshop, covering interpreting for check-ups and well visits in the following areas of specialization: Adult Medicine and Pediatrics, often referred to as Family Medicine, and the Dental Clinic. Topics one can expect to cover in each clinic; how to prepare in advance (terminology and concepts related to development, metrics and measurements); proper protocols before, during and after the examination will be reviewed. Resources, recommendations and best practices for interpreting in these settings will be shared.

Standards of Practice related to sight translation and assisting patients with forms will be looked at carefully. You will learn about a tool for quickly assessing sight translation requests (that is, weeding out requests that are appropriate from those that are not, along with practical suggestions for handling these requests. Best practice recommendations for navigating privacy issues when assisting patients with paperwork will be shared, as well as how to handle the entering of personal information on forms. The importance of the Pre-Session will be reviewed.

Most of this presentation is devoted into delving into what distinguishes annual check-ups for both men vs women, adult vs an infant or child, and for dental appointments. What one can expect will take place during these types of well visits will be explained. With the changes brought about by the implementation of Section 1557, more and more dental practices are scheduling interpreters for their patients. A review of practices for preventative (annual check-ups) and corrective (orthodontia) dental care will be reviewed.

This session also covers best practice for assisting patients with intake and return visit paperwork, and NCIHC recommendations for what qualifies for sight translation, and what types of documents need to be professionally translated.
There will be practice delivering a brief, yet complete pre-session, and how to ask for repetitions and clarifications in a professional manner. Methods (formulas) and phone apps for converting from imperial to metric measures will be shared. Mathematical concepts such as median, mean, average, percentage and percentile, will be discussed in order to help attendees grasp the concepts clearly, so as to find equivalents for their language pair.

This workshop looks at best practices for remote interpreting from home. Increasingly, during the pandemic, many onsite interpreters have made this shift as independent contractors. Telehealth is booming, and despite the easy commute when one works from home, assignments have gotten tougher, as remote interpreting requests have grown in scope and increasingly are scheduled for complex encounters, during this pandemic.

Guidelines for choosing equipment, workstation set-up and connectivity requirements, observing HIPAA, and managing clients during the session are shared. We’ll look at how to: enhance one’s remote persona, and utilize scripts to enforce best practice (pre-session, confidentiality, transparency and managing the flow). Local and Federal law governing call center employment practices will be examined. Links will be shared for materials and exercises to assist interpreters with skills assessment and enhancement.

1) Understand how to triage requests to the appropriate modality
2) Know how to configure your home or call center workstation for best user experience
3) Understand the importance of continually self-assessing one’s interpreting skills; knowing where to find training materials to develop and improve that skillset

Robin Ragan is a professor of Spanish at Knox College in Illinois, teaching in a translation and interpreter training program designed by her. She earned her CMI-Spanish since 2016, and is a Illinois state court interpreter as well. In 2020 she earned the Global Engagement Initiative Award from the American Council on Teachers of Foreign Languages Global for her translation and interpreting program at Knox, and a Humanities Innovation Grant from the Modern Languages Association to support new coursework on “Interpreting for Crisis Contexts in Immigration”. Robin is also a collaborator with Americans Against Language Barriers where she trains future medical interpreters and frequently teaches units on Modes, Roles, Ethics and Vicarious Trauma. She interprets for psychosocial evaluations on a weekly basis through her work with immigrant populations and asylum seekers.

Who is teaching?

Megan Yabumoto is a pediatric genetic counselor in Medical Genetics at Seattle Children’s Hospital (SCH) where she sees patients in the general genetics, skeletal dysplasias, and epilepsy genetics clinics. Megan graduated from Stanford University School of Medicine with a Master’s degree in Human Genetic and Genetic Counseling in 2022. Megan, Ernesto, and other colleagues have been partnering with the in-house interpreter and translation services at SCH to better bridge the gap in understanding of common and complex genetics topics.

Ernesto Marquez Montes graduated in Spring of 2024 from the University of Washington with his Master’s in Genetic Counseling. Currently, he works as a bilingual children and family counselor in community services. He also has experience working with neurodiverse individuals and is passionate about making services accessible. Ernesto believes that fostering a partnership with healthcare interpreters is vital to accessible healthcare and critical for the future of genetics.

This on-demand workshop walks interpreters through explanations and examples of teachings for the most common specialized diets that patients are put on. Our Registered Dietitian, Megan Greenlee, will review the ketogenic diet, elimination diets for FPIES and EOE, gluten- and dairy-free diets, and more, giving detailed examples of patient education for each one. Participants will have the opportunity to practice specific interpreting skills, like retention and accuracy, that will be needed to interpret dietary teachings in the course of their work. The presentation includes valuable insights and practical applications for interpreters working in medical settings.

Megan Greenlee Mapes is a Registered Dietitian, Certified Dietitian Nutritionist and Certified Specialist in Pediatrics. Megan became a dietitian after earning her first degree in baking and pastry art and becoming fascinated by the science behind food. That experience paired with a desire for a career that would allow her to help others made clinical nutrition and dietetics the obvious choice. She graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology in 2015 and moved to West Virginia to complete her dietetic internship at Ruby Memorial Hospital of West Virginia University. After passing her RD exam in 2016, Megan went into clinical care and eventually made her way to pediatrics. In 2021 Megan passed her Certified Specialist in Pediatrics exam. Megan comes from the world of pediatric gastroenterology with ample experience in failure to thrive, infant feeding concerns, formula and breast milk fortification, nutrition support (all tube feeding types and TPN), picky eaters, constipation, IBS, IBD and healthy lifestyle. While Megan loves the pediatric population, she also sees adult patients and enjoys empowering patients to focus on their health and not their weight and finding ways to incorporate all foods into a healthy lifestyle.

Approximately 10% of individuals struggle with infertility problems. The chances are that you know someone who has been affected by difficulty trying to conceive or have a baby. Unlike many medical specialties, reproductive endocrinology is rarely covered by medical insurance. Most patients who seek these treatments have saved for years to see a specialist that can help them try to conceive and have a pregnancy that ends in a live birth.

The stakes are high for limited English proficient patients who seek this type of medical care. It is imperative these patients receive accurate information from an interpreter who understands the physical, emotional, and financial struggles they have endured to receive this care.

During this four-hour webinar, interpreters will hear from a patient, named Sarah, who has experienced infertility struggles. Sarah will share about her struggles with polycystic ovary syndrome which caused her difficulty conceiving a child. She will share about the hardships she and her husband experienced throughout their infertility journey. Often, our sense of obligation to the justice system, to language access, or to our role as officers of the court collides with the expectations of unobtrusiveness and impartiality that are fundamental to the profession. This is understandable, as we can be simultaneously defined as interpreters, officers of the court, subject matter experts, independent contractors or court staff. The fact that many of us work in healthcare, community and conference settings can also serve to complicate our ability to respond appropriately to complex situations in the courtroom.

The environment outside the courtroom, while perhaps less complicated, also poses challenges for novice and experienced interpreters alike. In the absence of guidance from our code of professional conduct, professional interactions with our peers can be rewarding, frustrating or unclear.

What should one do if a colleague is misinterpreting testimony? Or stating on the record that they are certified, when they are not? What if the translated evidence presented by one of the parties is inaccurate? Should you share your opinion about the work of a colleague to one of your clients? Can you ever be a respectable “check” interpreter? Where does the role of the professional interpreter end, and the duty as an officer of the court begin?

This course provides an in-depth comparative analysis of criminal procedure reforms in key Latin American jurisdictions—Chile, Argentina, Peru, Colombia, and Mexico—and contrasts them with U.S. federal criminal procedure.

Translating official legal documents requires different approach than other kinds of translations. Translators working with OLD (Official Legal Documents) have to navigate the requirements of the recipient authority/country. This course will present a unique experience and process that is specific to the instructor's own country of origin (Croatia) but is applicable to any official document translation and in determining the most common requirements in translating OLDs.

Participants will gain a deeper understanding of procedural stages of working with clients directly, from initial communications to time and fee estimation, translation process, and finally certification of the translation.

By addressing the common problems, especially when concepts between the original and recipient are not equivalent, participants will enhance their ability to define those concepts of legal translation of official documents and apply them in their work.

About the instructor:
Dubravka Martincic is a Bosnian, Croatian, and Serbian medical and legal interpreter and a translator of personal legal documents. She holds certifications by DSHS and WA State Courts as well as an MA in Teaching English and German Languages and Literature from Croatia. Dubravka’s interpreting career began in Nashville, Tennessee, at Vanderbilt University Hospital, when she was asked to assist with interpreting for Bosnian refugees. Around that time the war in Bosnia brought an influx of refugees to Kentucky and Tennessee, putting interpreting services in high demand. At the same time, a couple of professional, federally certified interpreters started an association called TAPIT (the Tennessee Association of Professional Interpreters and Translators). Dubravka worked closely with the founders of TAPIT, learning invaluable skills, building her freelancing business, and eventually serving as the Association’s president from 2005-2006. In 2006, she moved to Washington State, where she currently lives and works. Dubravka is an avid gardener, cook, and yogini.

Who is teaching?

Graciela Hernandez is the current Project Manager for the Protection Order Advocacy Program within the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. Prior to this role, she was a protection order advocate helping survivors of intimate partner violence navigate the complex civil legal system. Fully bilingual in Spanish and English, she brings a deep level of cultural competency to her work and aims to break down barriers for immigrant survivors of domestic violence. Having worked as both a community and systems-based advocate over the past nine years, Graciela holds a comprehensive understanding of trauma-informed practices and works to empower survivors of all backgrounds to take lead in their protection order cases. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with family, volunteering in her son’s kindergarten class, and planning a good party. Currently, she is very excited and a bit stressed as she plans her daughter’s quinceañera this upcoming summer!

Kelsey Greer has been with the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office since September 2018. She started as an intern with the Protection Order Advocacy Program during her MSW program and was hired in January 2019. She later transferred over to criminal as the Felony First Appearance Advocate for the DV Unit and later as a Firearms Enforcement Advocate with the Regional Domestic Violence Firearms Unit (RDVFEU). She came back to POAP in 2023 as an advocate and in the last two years transitioned to being a Project Manager overseeing the Protection Order Portal (POP) and now the Program Manager. In her free time, she enjoys all the adventure the outdoors has to offer in her free time including road trips, camping, and hiking with her dog, Pepper, along with reading and binging comfort shows alongside her cat, Wrigley.

About the Instructor

Tiffany Tsao will discuss the challenges of translating Indonesian literature in the context of a publishing industry that has tended to value Indonesian works more for their “Indonesianness” than their literary value. Catering to a readership interested specifically in the history, culture, and living conditions of Indonesia has some near-term benefits, but does this approach do Indonesian writing a disservice over the long term? She will discuss, more specifically, how this state of affairs has shaped the decisions she has made as a translator – from the works she has chosen to translate, to her approach to the translation process itself. As part of her visit to Seattle, acclaimed author, editor, and literary translator from the Indonesian Tiffany Tsao will lead an undergraduate workshop for students in Takami Nieda’s ENGL210: Translation for Global Competence class. The second half of the class will be dedicated to workshopping translations by NOTIS members.

A limited number of seats are available to NOTIS members. Interested members should register here. The registration portal will close when the cap is reached.

The window to submit a text for this workshop is closed, but it's not too late to register to attend!

Three to five translations by NOTIS members will be selected for workshopping. Please tick the box when you register if you'd like to participate, and instructions about how to submit your work will be emailed to you. Your text can be translated from any language and it can be any genre, but it should be no longer than 1 page. Please be ready to also submit a paragraph contextualizing your excerpt (a little about the work and the author, the style, your translation strategy, or any other relevant information). Texts will be due by April 1 so that Tiffany can review them before her residency begins. You do NOT have to have an excerpt ready in order to register for this class.

The keynote speaker from the NOTIS 2025 Annual Conference is back by popular demand!

This workshop will help you apply principles of deliberate practice to interpreting training in order to boost your ability to self-reflect and improve your performance in dialogue interpreting. Deliberate practice calls for constructive feedback, which is the focus of this webinar. You will learn how to use a rubric and an error categorization system to self-critique recordings of your own interpretations, all using a practice dialogue from Terp (https://terp.app), an online platform for intuitive and rewarding interpreting training.

First, you will learn the basics of deliberate practice. Then you will learn how rubrics and error categories can aid your efforts to self-critique your performance. Next, you will conduct a practice session on Terp, recording all your interpretations, after which you will listen to your recordings and critique your own performance in a detailed way using error categories and then holistically using a rubric. Finally, you will repeat the process and reflect on how you can incorporate deliberate practice into your personal interpreting training regimen.

Devin Gilbert is a translation/interpreting practitioner, educator, and researcher. About the book:

Growing up, the Hasegawas were the perfect family. Kaoru’s loving parents doted on their children. Kaoru’s baby sister, Miki, was cute and charismatic, and his older brother, Hajime—a natural leader, athlete, and charmer—was the superstar. The middle child, Kaoru was good at school, but not a star student, friendly with girls but never popular. He was content to exist in Hajime’s shadow, and occasionally bask in his light. Then Hajime was involved in a tragic accident that fractured the Hasegawas, with nothing to keep them together but memories and melancholy.

Returning home, Kaoru and his family must find the strength to reckon with the past and pick up the pieces of their shattered lives. Luckily, there is Sakura, who somehow has managed to stay happy. What’s her secret? As the Hasegawas learn to let go, it is Sakura who holds the key to help them move forward.

Kanako Nishi is a Japanese writer and artist. She is the author of the novels Sakura, which was a major bestseller in Japan; Tsutenkaku (Osaka Tower), which won the Sakunosuke Oda Prize; Fukuwarai (Lucky Laugh), which received the first Hayao Kawai Prize; and Saraba!, which won the prestigious Naoki prize in 2015. She was named Vogue Japan’s Woman of the Year in 2015 and among Granta’s Best of Young Japanese Novelists 2016. Several of her books have been adapted for film. Born in Tehran in 1977, Nishi grew up in Cairo and Osaka and lives in Tokyo.

Allison Markin Powell is a literary translator, editor, and publishing consultant. She received the 2020 PEN America Translation Prize for The Ten Loves of Nishino by Hiromi Kawakami. Her other translations and co-translations include works by Osamu Dazai, Shiori Ito, Ryunosuke Akutagawa, and Kaoru Takamura.

Gabriella Page-Fort is executive editor at HarperOne, publishing nonfiction and fiction with an emphasis on works in translation. Her list includes PEN/Faulkner-longlisted Behind You Is the Sea by Susan Muaddi Darraj and PEN Translation Award-longlisted The Invisible Sun by Attar, translated from Persian by Sholeh Wolpe. She teaches Publishing Works in Translation at New York University’s School of Professional Studies, handles the book section and zine for Hex Enduction Records & Books in Seattle, and translates from French and Spanish.

Many, if not most, of the ethical mistakes made by interpreters tends to come from a place of trying to be helpful, polite, or supportive. But the unintended consequence may be an ethical violation. Understanding role boundaries clearly can help interpreters navigate the waters of customer service in a way that consistently upholds the Code of Ethics.

This webinar will explore all of the above. Scripts will be shared for positive, professional interaction, and breakout room sessions will offer the opportunity for attendees to practice.

Attendees will learn to describe:

What a code of ethics is
Why a code of ethics exists for every health profession
What the interpreter code of ethics covers

Handouts: We will have a Venn diagram activity for attendees to compare the codes of ethics and then report back on ethics held in common. Please print them prior to the workshop or have them ready on another device.

Understanding where mental health services are provided and who delivers them, ensuring interpreters are familiar with the landscape of mental health care.

Yuliya Speroff is a Russian-English CoreCHI™ and DSHS-certified healthcare interpreter. What is this about? This three-hour course is designed for healthcare interpreters and other language access professionals seeking to deepen their understanding of sleep physiology, disorders, and treatment pathways encountered in medical interpreting settings.

Class Description: Sleep is one of the foundations of good health and well-being. Throughout centuries, people have struggled to achieve better sleep, often using harmful and addictive substances. Today’s modern medicine has made significant progress in explaining how sleep works, how we fall asleep, what happens if we don’t get enough sleep, and how to get better sleep. We will start with some basic definitions of sleep, walk through the stages of sleep, emphasize the importance of sleep, and touch on the fascinating world of dreams. In the next section, we will discuss sleep disorders like obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, nightmare disorders, and PTSD.

After we wrap up the presentation, there will be a quick knowledge-check session with 12 questions (attached) to reinforce our understanding of key concepts discussed in the training. This will be followed by three real-life, interactive practice scenarios. The first one is an appointment between the medical provider and the patient seeking help for insomnia. The second one is between the pharmacist and the patient’s wife, who is trying to pick up his prescription. The third scenario is the telephone call between the health insurance representative and the patient’s daughter, discussing some steps on how to get the coverage for the needed medicine. All three scenarios are based on my own everyday work as a language interpreter. At the close of the training session, we will have a quick Q&A session. The participants can ask questions while being encouraged to do their own research and enhance their knowledge base on sleep through self-guided learning.

After our three-hour journey into the realm of sleep, participants will be able to:

Identify mechanisms, engineering, and physiology of sleep: stages of sleep, REM and non-REM sleep, sleep deprivation, dreaming, and dreams
Be familiar with the most common sleep disorders, including SDB, insomnia, and PTSD-related nightmares
Recognize treatments and pathways to better sleep, including prescription and over-the-counter sleeping aids, devices, gadgets, and sleep hygiene
Strengthen medical interpreting skills by practicing real-life healthcare scenarios
Enhance their interpreting vocabulary and become more proficient in interpreting sessions dealing with sleep disorders

Nada Conner had enjoyed being a language interpreter for over 30 years. She began her interpreting career in the Air Force Training Center in Tripoli, Libya, where she facilitated communications as Arabic interpreter for Libyan Air Force instructors and trainees. Her next career move was Iraq, where she worked on several military construction sites as well as in Baghdad Headquarters. After that, she worked as a Language Assistant for United Nations Protection Forces in Croatia, during the tumultuous period of unrest in the region. Since then, she has been working as a freelance interpreter and translator for district courts throughout Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and beyond. She is a remote interpreter for several large language interpreting agencies, working very hard every day to help LEP’s get the best possible communications outcome and easily access resources that may otherwise be difficult or impossible. A native of Serbia, Nada graduated from University of Belgrade with B.A. degree in languages and literature. She is a certified court interpreter by AOC in Washington State, and also WA DSHS Medical and Social Services authorized interpreter for Bosnian, Serbian, and Croatian languages. She lives in Bellingham with five gorgeous rabbits.

What is it about?

“Understanding Medical Terminology for Interpreters and Translators” is designed to make the fascinating and often complex “foreign” language of medicine more accessible. Participants will learn widely used basic medical terms, and principles for deciphering new, unfamiliar terms based on an understanding of the building blocks of medical terminology. We will then review specialized terms used in different specialty fields of medicine. This webshop is appropriate for medical interpreters and translators who wish to strengthen their understanding of the language of medicine as well as an excellent foundation for court interpreters who encounter medical terms in their work. Because the focus is on learning basic terms and understanding how medical terms are constructed – rather than on interpreting practice – this webshop is relevant for professionals working in any language pair.

Bridges, dams, abutments and anchors – are you interpreting in construction? No! It’s dentistry, and the vocabulary alone can pose some real, um, “concrete” challenges.

This 8-hour webshop will prepare participants to provide interpreting services for five types of dental care: dental hygiene, restorations, extractions, prosthodontics (dentures and implants) and oral surgery. The class will also include basic oral anatomy and a discussion of specific challenges for interpreters serving in dental venues.

Taught in Cindy Roat’s signature style mixing lecture, polls, games and exercises (and lots of really bad puns) – this class is designed for experienced interpreters and advanced learners. The class will move quickly, covering a lot of material in a short time.

Genetic Counseling for Medical Interpreters: Beyond the Basics

Course Description:

This 3-hour intermediate training builds on foundational knowledge of genetic counseling and explores more advanced genetics and genomics concepts relevant to healthcare interpreting. Facilitated by two Washington State genetic counselors, the workshop deepens participants’ understanding of the role of genetic counselors, complex genetic concepts, and interpretation of genetic tests and conditions commonly discussed in clinical and pediatric settings.

Completion of the on-demand workshop Introduction to Genetic Counseling for Medical Interpreters is recommended, but not required, prior to attending this intermediate session.

Sleep Physiology, Disorders, and Treatments for Medical Interpreters

Interpret sleep-related conditions and treatments with clarity and confidence in medical settings.

Presenter: Nada Conner

What is it about? This three-hour course is designed for healthcare interpreters and other language access professionals seeking to deepen their understanding of sleep physiology, disorders, and treatment pathways encountered in medical interpreting settings.

We will start with some basic definitions of sleep, walk through the stages of sleep, emphasize the importance of sleep, and touch on the fascinating world of dreams. In the next section, we will discuss sleep disorders like obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, nightmare disorders, and PTSD.

After our three-hour journey into the realm of sleep, participants will be able to:

Identify mechanisms, engineering, and physiology of sleep: stages of sleep, REM and non-REM sleep, sleep deprivation, dreaming, and dreams
Be familiar with the most common sleep disorders, including SDB, insomnia, and PTSD-related nightmares
Recognize treatments and pathways to better sleep, including prescription and over-the-counter sleeping aids, devices, gadgets, and sleep hygiene
Strengthen medical interpreting skills by practicing real-life healthcare scenarios
Enhance their interpreting vocabulary and become more proficient in interpreting sessions dealing with sleep disorders

Participants will receive:

Comprehensive list of source materials

practice scenarios for consecutive interpreting, between the provider, pharmacist, insurance representative, and sleep-deprived patient and their family members.

Diabetes is a serious health condition that affects over 34 million Americans. Diabetes can have serious long-term effects on patients’ health and lead to severe complications. Management and treatment of diabetes may involve a team of medical professionals — from endocrinologists to mental health specialists, as well as the patient and their family.

This class is designed to help interpreters prepare for interpreting in encounters related to diabetes care — whether it’s an insulin injection education session or a dialysis discussion. The class will cover:

Definition of diabetes and related physiology
Common types of diabetes
How diabetes is diagnosed
Common approaches to treating diabetes
Complications of diabetes
Challenges for interpreters
Terminology and interpreting skills practice

Rose Cano is a a Spanish-language diabetes navigator working in the Interpreter Services Department (ISD) at Harborview Medical Center/UW Medicine in Seattle, WA. Rose has worked at Harborview for 4 years, initially as medical interpreter staff and more recently in the role of navigator for a grant-funded initiative aiming to improve Spanish and Somali patients’ management of diabetes. The Interpreter Services Department at Harborview provides interpretation to patients in over 90 languages via in-person, telephonic and video modalities and contributes to the health and well-being of refugee and immigrant patients, families and communities through a continuum of other programs of cross-cultural care and education. As diabetes navigator, Rose serves as a cultural broker/mediator between Spanish-speaking patients and health providers in order to ensure culturally congruent care. She also helps patients and their families navigate the complexity of the hospital and health care system. She has a passion for storytelling and “narrative medicine”, and strives to make sure that the patient’s perspective of the world is included in the provider’s assessment and treatment plan.

Certificates of Attendance will be awarded to all who arrive on time and stay for the entire workshop. Please allow yourself enough time to log on and sign in before the webshop begins.
